Practicing stroke without pool table?

I like that, I'll have to try that one, thanks! Sounds like it teaches you to step into the shot properly and on-line so that you don't have to make unnecessary adjustments to get in-line once you're down on the shot.

The most helpful stroke drill I've found without a table is this;

Take your ironing board and set it to about the bed height of a pool table. Put a strip of masking tape straight down the center of the ironing board. Use a large straight edge and a sharpie to make a line down the center of the masking tape. This is now your line of aim between an imaginary CB and OB. You can even put a ball on the line at the end of the ironing board if it helps you visualize.

Stand behind the ironing board like you would while lining up a shot and get down on the line of aim. Now with no warm up strokes, look to see if your cue is pointing straight down the line you made with the sharpie. If not, stand up and do it again. If you're on line, pull the cue back and stroke forward while looking at the end of the tape (or ball if you put one there) on the ironing board. Keep your stroke in the finish position and observe where your tip is in relation to the line you made with the sharpie. The results will probably surprise you.

I also like to get down as described before and take full strokes, full back swing to finish position, and just observe what my cue is doing in relation to the line on the tape.

Doing those two exercises really helps me hone in on bad habits I might be developing from start to finish--sighting down the line of aim, getting down, and stroking.

Hope that helps a little. It does wonders for me when my stroke is out of whack.

Before ya know it your wife will be handing you the iron!!
