I have learned alot on this forum. I am about to finish my first cue. question is.... when you finish a cue do you spray the clear on with the shaft on the butt? if not how do you keep clear from getting on the joint face? masking tape could work...but not sure if that is the best way. if the shaft is left on...do you spray coats of clear then separate the shaft from the butt so that the clear doesnt stick the 2 together? dont know. I'm pretty clear on the finishing prosses. (my best friend paints cars for a living) but not on prep work or post work specific to cue making.

You can leave the shaft attached but you must remove it before the paint cures. Break the shaft loose about 15 minutes after you shoot it & you'll be OK. If you wait too long, the paint will probably crack when you separate the butt & the shaft.

Or...you could mask it.

Or...you can paint the butt separately & just avoid spraying the joint face. If you get overspray or a run on the face, use a razor blade to scrape it off. Be sure to scrape it off. Do not attempt to slice it off.

Or...you can use a washer of paint-resistant material between the butt & the shaft when you paint them. You'll have to make these yourself but they work great.
