Price Check in Aisle 3

So I'm being quoted $550 to re-felt a 9ft table if I provide my own felt and an additional $400 to put new rails on.

Based on the conversations I have seen here that price seemed really high but what do I know so I figured I would check with the folks doing it for a living!

Thoughts?

Where do you live? My mechanic charges $500 to change the cloth including 860HR. The rail install charge seems about right.

Seems a little high, but I've seen some really outrageous quotes lately. If your table has 3 pieces of slate, and they need to be re adjusted, that price is not far from what it should be. Of course, this is assuming whoever is doing it knows what they are doing and values quality work over speed and greed.

My .02 as a table owner and one who's paid again to redo a hack job...... If your installer is first class, does things right the first time, no aggravation involved..... simply pay and thank him. But he has be the real deal. I had to have a job done over...bought my own Simonis 860 cloth from Seyberts. Paid the new installer to change the cloth. I paid labor and 9 hours travel time as I do not trust anyone local. Research who is being used... the job will be right or wrong. And wrong cannot be straightened out by the same person.

It's the same installer who put my table in and he also comes recommended by the maker.

I trust him, he is solid, and if I found a problem I have no doubt he would make it right.

I was just trying to find out if that price was the going rate for a owner supplied cloth install.

Gotcha Just my .02 again. There is no going rate.

Research is important, there are a lot of people who will install cloth in our area but its extremely difficult to find someone who does a professional quality job. I dont just want cloth installed, I want a professionally completed job, one that doesnt require someone to come back a second time

That’s what we expect. BilliardsFlorida … and I do not mind publicly saying their name did an absolutely lousy shit job but promised their best crew. Said they’d come back with a different cloth guy to replace the cloth. Never followed up. But they came recommended. Shop shop shop … forget about WhiteGlove service and their word.

What do you mean by new rails? New cushions I assume?

Putting on new cushions would be in the $400 ballpark.

The cloth installation price is way too high IMO. If you are buying Simonis (for a 9 foot), it will be almost $370 plus tax just for the cloth. Almost $1000 for a table recover is ridiculous. At least in my area it is.

It's surprisingly hard to hire a good mechanic around KC, but I know of a few in the area who are about as good as they get. What they charge or whether they're taking on jobs like yours, I have no idea. But a talk with any of them would tell you all you need to know.

The most meticulous mechanic I ever saw work on a table was Doug Patrick even though he's better known as a cuemaker. He used to be the house cue guy at Shooters in Olathe but is now somewhere closer to STL, I think. I know he did some mechanic work for Side Pockets North last year. I don't know what he charges, but if he gave you a quote like the one you mentioned--all I can say is, it'd be worth it.

I don't remember the name of the current house mechanic for Shooters, but he and Dave Matlock seem to be good friends and you can find them playing each other most nights at Shooters. You could hit him up to see what he might do it for. You can tell he does good work by how well all the tables play at Shooters.

Another mechanic extraordinare in the area would be Steve Hassell. He worked miracles on Big Bertha and the heated billiards table at Raytown Rec when he redid them last summer, but that was right before he stopped working there so he may not be available anymore.
