purpleheart shaft turning question

I have a question regarding purpleheart shafts. If I want to try turning a few purple heart shafts is there anything I need to be aware of? Do they require finish afterward? It seems like they could be splintery, can that be a problem. Do they require the same time between turnings as with maple? If someone has experience with purple shafts the information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Purple is splintery/crumbly. Also heavier and harder of course. It is considered exotic so wear a mask.
Purple is very stable. Much more stable than maple. Make sure you get a straight-grained one and no knotts. Fine sand it and use french polish if you want. Finishing near the joint wouldn't hurt.

Hey Joseph, just got home last night from a long road trip. Delivered Mike Gulyassy's new 4 head CNC saw/lathe.

I'll be coming to the west coast in early June. Wanted to stop and visit with you and see your shop. I'll be out west for 2 or 3 days. Send me your phone number and address, and will buy you lunch or dinner. Or a few cold beers.....PM, me pal...
