Question on rosewood

I am thinking about a new cue and wood like to do something nostalgic. I am considering a rosewood cue with a nice orange cast to it. Would this be Brazilian rosewood?

Appreciate any advice you guys might have and if you have seen a good outlet to buy a blank from.

Thanks in advance,
Jimmy

No, Brazilian rosewood does not typically have orange in it. If you really want it to be rosewood, the best bet would be a piece of cocobolo selected for color. Cocobolo from Panama typically is a little more orange than other coco's.

Jim, you are probably thinking honduran rosewood. Barry has used it quite a bit in his cues. Like the cue on the left in my avatar. I would describe it as a light to medium brown with visible grain/streaks but there is definitely an orangish feel to the overall color. Definitely not as orange as you see in some of the cocobolos though. Hopefully this will help.

Jimmy,
If you want nostalgia, stay with the brazilian. Some people think that the brazilian has the best "tone" of all the rosewoods. Cocobolo is good if you want an orange hue, Skip Weston had some that I would call very orange, so there has to be something in between. Out of all the legal rosewoods I like the Indian rosewood with the purplish hue. Some dark cocobolos can be substituted for rosewood. I have seen some very dark stuff that could fool just about anyone.

For reference, two different rosewood cues I have......

Top cue: Paul Mottey, Brazilian Rosewood
Bottom cue: John Showman, Guatemalan Rosewood

Many thanks

Guys, the previous few posts have been a great help. I like all the choices, but I am leaning toward something similar to Sean's Szam. I guess the most difficult part will be ordering a piece online and being happy with it once I receive it.

Thanks again, :)

What a shame Joe. That would be a great choice. I'll talk to you soon and see what the options are.

Do you know what type of rosewood that is??
