Questions for having a break cue made...

... I have a few local guys that make cues here in the Philippines and I want to have a break cue made. I really don't care about aesthetics, I just want a cue that is made from the correct wood and has the proper ferrule, joint and tip.

What wood should be used?
What joint should be used?
What ferrule should be used?
What material should the tip be?

You just asked four questions based on preference.

IMO, you should use: Balsa Wood, Carriage Bolt Joint, Marshmallow Ferrule, and the tip should be made from the finest grade bubble gum, for extra spin.



All joking aside, do some research. An all purple heart breaker with a G10 tip may be too much for you.

Why? There are so many great breakers on the market, why spend money on a cue that you won't know if u like it or not ? Just saying

Because I am living in the Philippines in an area where I just can't go to a store and buy one or order one. Having one shipped from the states is also a problem and expensive. I can have one made here for less than the prices I see back home, especially since I don't care what it looks like since it will sit in my case 99% of the time. I just want to have my facts straight on what is needed before I talk to some cue makers. The cost should be less than the prices I see back home.

Well, IMO, if aesthetics don't mean anything then you really only have to think about joint, shaft, tip and ferrule. For the joint, go with whatever is on your player, but I'd go with phenolic collars as they hold up really well on break cues. A maple shaft is still a great choice for breaking, but again, phenolic ferrule for the same reason as the collars. Start with shaft that's 13mm and shorter taper until you decide what works best for you.

I recommend a hard leather tip at first. An ultraskin HH is a good option. I have two HH's at home because I havnt felt the need to change my samsara. But if you start with a samsara and don't like it, it hurts a little to cut off a $25 tip. Phenolic, white diamond and g10 tips are another way to go because they are very hard and don't really wear out, but don't control the cue ball as well as hard leather.

If you get one made like this and decide to change something like the shaft material, you can have a different shaft made for the butt for 1/2 the price of a new cue. Others will tell you to try what the players around you are breaking with (this is good advice) and decide what you like best. Also use the search function and do some research to help you decide.
