Rack your own?

I think the U.S. Open is making a huge mistake by letting players rack their own this year. This will create a lot of hostility towards some of the players who are known for their racking abilities.

I am no fan of the Sardo rack; however, it is by far the fairest form of racking the balls during big tournaments. The U.S. Open should go back and use the Sardo racks during its tournament.

Either that or have rackers available...

I disagree ....

The opposing player has the option to check the rack, and you can be sure the breaking player is going to rack a good rack. Leaving balls loose is of no benefit, and most 'rack' mechanics are racking to keep balls out of the pocket, not in the pocket.

As far as a 'rack' mechanic being able to read a rack, that has more to do with them 'studying' breaks from certain spots and with certain types of english on the cue ball for balls to react in certain ways, in other words patterns depending on breaking, just like the cut break to make the 1 in the side. Just because someone gets all the 'breaking factors' right for a consistent break does not mean they are a rack mechanic. And being a rack mechanic is far far away from being a pure science.

For example, I have seen Bustamante come up dry on his break in matches where he is considered one of the best breakers. I saw Corey come up dry in the latter stages of the IPT Reno event, maybe he overanalyzed the racks ... lol His overall play from level 4 on was
not inspiring.

I would like to know if the Open has any restrictions on breaking cues, or if phenolic tips are okay to break with. I would say yes, just offhand, since Charlie is still on the winner's side and must be using his Xbreaker
X-347, but which shaft for it? (Xbreaker tip or special leather tip?).

are you kidding me? i can name a lot of the players who rack them tight and the corner balls go in almost every time.

i can't foresee a player walking up to check the rack every time someone else racks. i don't see a lot of players checking johnny's racks.

I guess

it didn't matter as John Schmidt put Johnny Archer out of the tournament.

John, what makes you suspect that certain players at the U.S. Open are doctoring their racks in order to benefit themselves? Have you noticed a known "rack mechanic" win matches that he ought not? If so, exactly how do you suppose he is altering a tight rack?

Don't you imagine that these seasoned pros would detect when their opponent is somehow doctoring their own racks to his benefit? And if so, would they not be checking every rack to make sure that isn't the case?
