Rare McDermott D16 Retro/P702, Splice Point pool cue, Leather Wrap. Now with only one shaft, the original 13mm McDermott Maple shaft, and a new lower sale price.
Price: $310, sold and shipped to continental US only. Free USPS shipping. Sorry, no returns unless terms are agreed upon beforehand.
I bought this brand new McDermott cue in the summer of 2008. It had been made using a new-old-stock D16 forearm from the D-Series era of 1984-90. Shortly afterword I ordered the extra shaft, a 12.8mm McDermott I2 Intimidator shaft [NO LONGER INCLUDED IN THE SALE]. The look and nature of this somewhat rare cue really took my fancy. The Ebay seller wrote: “Quiet elegance is the best way to describe this cue! Here is another beautiful limited production McDermott D16 Retro/P702 pool cue. These are very rare cues, and something like 50 are available world wide! When McDermott uses up the D16 forearms they found in their attic, there won't be any more of these!”
This is a handsome cue, quite beautiful in a very understated way. It could pass almost anywhere for a Sneaky Pete cue, until it got a closer look. Like many McDermott cues, it shoots just fine, though "shoots fine" is always a matter of the shooters taste, now isn’t it? This cue has seen very light use, possibly under a hundred games in my 14 years of ownership. It was always too nice a cue to take to the nearest pool hall 60 miles away. So we usually played alone on our home table,
Due to the dark rosewood and the low contrast between forearm sections and black wrap, one has to look carefully to get a good sense of what the cue looks like. I have tried to choose only photos that help the potential buyer get a more perfect idea of the actual cue. The cue is dark, with subtle red-green-blue splice inlays. The sharp splice points become more visible when lit with bright light - check the last photo which was taken with a bit of flash to see what I mean.
Specifications:
Shaft & Joint: 3/8 x 10, stainless steel pin into wood on the original maple shaft.
Shaft and Butt Collars: some sort of black plastic, maybe Implex.
Forearm: Splice Points of Red, Green, and Blue inlaid veneers on a forearm made of dark East Indian Rosewood, with lighter East Indian Rosewood in the area inside the splice points, and for the butt sleeve. Note: These forearms were made for, but not used on, the original run of splice-point D16 cues made 1984-1990.
Wrap: McDermott’s usual Black leather or leather-like material, embossed with a lizard-like pattern.
Sleeve Collar: McD’s ‘Black Recon Ebony’ with 1 German Brass ring.
Butt Sleeve: East Indian Rosewood, lighter than the darker forearm section.
Butt Cap: one thin German Brass ring, then ‘Black Recon Ebony’ with gold McDermott logo.
Bumper: the usual soft McDermott removable bumper.
Shaft length, each: 29”
Butt length: 29”
Weights, measured recently on electronic scale:
