re-alignment of compressed cue

i was wondering how you can re-align a cue that has been compressed at the joint due to a softer joint and stiffer shaft--which causes a slight roll when together, but rolls straight when separated.

can i do this myself or is it too tricky??

If you have a lathe you can do it yourself. You need to face the joints on the shaft and the butt. This means making them flat and square. I would do the softer joint first and then recheck the alignment.

do you have to sand it down? or is it a process in which you press the joint onto something flat??

As "Mase" mentioned you really need a lathe to properly face either the butt end or the shaft end of the joint. I would recommend that you take it to a professional. Without seeing the cue I could not say for sure but judging from your description it is an easy fix (with the right equipment) and it should not be expensive.
