Read About my Upcoming Adventure in The Netherlands

"I'm not sure I know anyone else who decides to do stuff like this"

Now you know one, me. I spent 3 days at Johan's place (it's in Belgium, right after the border with Holland) and it was worth doing that. You'll meet his wonderful family and they'll make you feel at home. Of course most of your training efforts will start when you'll be back home, but you will have a great roadmap to "take the game seriously".

I remember how it came to my mind. I was playing in a Eurotour event, I lost 10-9 to a very well known pro after leading the whole match (and 9-7 with the break). Right after the match of course I was very disappointed with myself for missing twice with open table and letting my opponent come back. Johan, in a few words, told me exactly how I was feeling during the match and pointed out a couple of weeknesses I could easily improve. This made me think... and book the flight the week after (just a 2 hrs flight btw).

Unfortunately some big family problems did not allow me to practise properly and play big tournaments again for more than one year, but when I finally got to start again, I just followed his advice and now I feel I'm a better player. There's still a lot to do, but it most depends on the lack of practise time I had lately. I'm pretty confident 2010 will be a very good year for both of us. Enjoy the experience, Liz!

P.S. I'm not getting any % from Johan lol ;)

Great post, Tom. This gets me even more excited to go. I travelled to St. Louis a few times to go see Mark Wilson, and it was worth every penny. This feels a little crazier to me because I am going to Europe, but that is all part of the adventure. I am going to write about it afterward.

Thread title: Read About my Upcoming Adventure in The Netherlands

Liz-ski:

Sounds like one of those 1950s-esque radio soap opera sign-offs:

"Read about Liz's upcoming Adventure in the Netherlands!
* Will they accept her with open arms?
* Will they be able to understand her Queens accent?
* Will AZB folks rally to the cause and help her out with the much-needed T&E funds?
* Will AZB'ers think she's going there instead to enjoy the scenery, great beer and food, and great Netherlands hospitality?

Stay tuned as we find out -- same bat time, same bat channel!" <organ music plays in background>

Funny, funny stuff Sean :)

I hope I have some energy after 50 hours of training to take in a few sights (and perhaps a few pints or "cups of coffee.")

Did I mention that Johan is also setting up some sparring partners for me... My pool muscles will certainly hurt after this is all done.

C'mon! No one is going to jump on my euphemistic "cups of coffee" comment? I thought I knew you people :)

Thanks, dardusm. I definitely see it as an investment, not only in my game but in my teaching abilities. I love to help people get better and I am excited to learn new techniques.

I didn't even think about the teaching aspect. Bet that there are not very many instructors in the US that use the European model of teaching/coaching. That might be a skill that's in demand  Good Luck!

Update

I've started to share some of Johan's training methods over at my blog if anyone is interested.

I haven't been able to put in 10 hours per day, but I've been doing 2-3 and it is still a lot of work :)
