Two things I have done and too help with this. Switched the end of my indicator to a flat head instead of the rounded one. And I will just touch the wood while it lathe is spinning with some 800 grit for about just .6 of a second to knock any fuzzy off before putting it to the dial.

<~~~with wood sometimes you have no choice but to just take an average.....
Thank you sir. Didn't think about the flat tip... Damn it is always the simple things.
Rep to you...

You should probably find something other that wood to put through the head like a stainless rod that has no run out and center your rear chuck with that. The gas receipt idea is not uncommon to center a rear chuck.

I've thought about a rear chuck, but the only machinist I know keeps putting off coming over to look at it and make an adaptor. I just put a bid on the Spyder unit on Ebay. I made delrin collets, but tired of making a new one every time I have a different size shaft.

With the price of gas now, wouldn't the receipt be HUGE ;-)
