Reasons for a fiber pad under tip?

SCHONJOHN

just one ball too far
I was wondering about the fiber pads used under the tip? I am wanting to have a cue built with a blue theme or a red flame theme. I thought a Kamui Black tip with either a blue or red fiber pad would look great. But how does it affect the hit?

I play 95% Barbox 8 Ball & 9 Ball and 5% 9ft and 10ft Banks & One Pocket

Doesnt really effect hit. In my opinion its mainly to protect the ferrule. Usually i would put them on ivory so the grain of the leather when it expands from hitting the balls doesnt pull the grain on the ivory and make it crack.

Other than that i dont use them much.

My favorite tip has always been the Chandivert Champion with the red fibre backing. It is also the only tip I've ever used that had a fibre backing. It gives me the best feel. Is it because of the backing, I don't know. I guess the only way to find out would be to cut the backing off one and see if it feels the same. But they're not made anymore and are getting harder and harder to find, so I'd hate to ruin one just for the sake of finding out.
