Recondition and cleaning shafts?

Recently I cleaned and reconditioned a shaft for a customer. I touched the shaft with 400 grit then used Hightower's shaft cleaner. This took most of the chalk off the shaft but still left some in the poors. My question is how do others recondition and clean without sanding the hell out of them. I would prefer not to use sand paper at all if I could.

thanks for any help, Jimbo

Yup, magic eraser is the key. Do a thread "search" and you can see my shafts after my eraser experience.

Magic Eraser does the trick. Thanks for the tip. I used the sponge lenght wise with lathe off. It took a little elbow grease but it worked and I didn't have to sand.

thanks, Jimbo.

and now the next question is ...

How do you keep the oil, grit, and chalk from getting into the grain of the wood to start with?

For those that can not stand anything but the bare wood feel there is no fix.

For the rest of us it is simple ... seal the grain with a clear sanding sealer.
If there is no place for the gunk to hide it will wipe right off with a LIGHTLY dampened cloth.
