refinishing stained cues

When refinishing a stained cue what is the procedure and how much can come off before it damages the stained part.If you take off too much can it be restained?thanks

It can be restained but matching is a nightmare in itself, so many variables, different stains by different manufactures, same stain but applied to a sealed cue as opposed to a new cue. The other is what kind of cue and what original finish was used compared to what you are using.
Best place to start is who made the cue and if possible talk to that maker.

Mostly these cues have the finish that is dinged up,scratched up.with nicks out ,the finish is mostly ok.Is it possible to sand or scrape down to just above the finish without damaging it?I saw a cuemaker peeling the old finish with a razor knife,it seemed to come off easy,wonder if anyone else does this.I guess it might matter how old it is what type etc.

Your last sentence is the most important. Once you touch it, you own it.
 
Chris Hightower had a section in his book on removing old finish with a razor blade. It's a great book to have.
