We have launched a new and exciting Nation Wide Pool Tournament Series and are in need of Regional Tournament Directors (TD). The initial Series begins with "Play-In" Tournaments on September 15th, Qualifiers begin in October, and the Semi-Finals will be scheduled for Saturday, December 6th and 13th. The Tournament Of Champions will be held in Atlanta, Georgia Friday, February 6th - Sunday, February 8th, 2004!

Excellent opportunity for those involved in their local billiards scene. Each Regional will have two - 32 player Qualifier Tournaments and one Semi-Final Championship per Series.

The TD will earn $250 per Tournament + a $250 Bonus if the Qualifiers have a full field of 32 Players. The TD will also earn commissions on the sales of Champion Quest products (ie: T-Shirts, Billiards Accessories, etc.) sold at their Tournaments.

The TD will also receive a commission for any Sponsors they personally sign for their respective Regions. The TD may also market our new billiards publication - Billiards Market Place (BMP) - to area billiards related businesses and earn commissions as well. BMP will distibute the first issue in early December '03!

In addition - should the Qualifiers have a full field, the TD will receive an expense paid trip to Atlanta, Georgia in February, 2004 for the Tournament Of Champions. This will include: Air Fare; Hotel Accomidations, Meals and an Invitation to the After Party.

We currently have TD's in mind for Atlanta, Jacksonville, Boston,
Baltimore, Dallas and Orlando. Should you have an interest in our
other Regions - please contact me ASAP. The Regions are listed below.

Please review our website (in progress) when you can.

To receive more information - please give me a call or an email.

Thanks,

UPDATE:

We now have TD's in mind for Atlanta, Jacksonville, Boston,
Baltimore, Dallas, Charlotte, New York, Columbus and Orlando. 9 down - only 23 to go!

I really need to have the TD's in place by September so we can get started with the Play-In Mini Tournaments. Let me hear from you if interested!

NEW INFO:

I've had several phone calls and emails from people interested in holding a Qualiying Tournament that isn't necessarily in a Regions hub city, but close by. Here's the deal - as long as your players won't mind traveling to the nearest Regional for the Semi-Finals AND you can put together a FULL field of 32 players - then we are all for it! The more the merrier! Send me an email or give me a buzz if you have a city in mind?

ALSO -

For the billiards publication (Billiards Market Place) we are putting together - we need freelance writers and photographers. If you are into your local pool scene and wish to give your area pool halls and players some exposure - please contact me. The first issue is scheduled to debut in early December!

Thanks,

potential for major problems

Mr. Coleman ...
I have read your post(s) and announcement(s) over the last few weeks and your tournament series is .. at the very least .. an ambitious project.
I neither know you .. nor know of anyone within the billiard community who knows of your pool promotion(s) ( if any ) .. and I provide the following information ( from prior experience ) so you may make a decision to protect yourself, the host sites and tournament directors from potential problems that may surface from your stated goals and criteria advertised thus far ...
Having spent the better part of the last quarter century promoting 3000+ national pocket billiard events, i.e., The McDermott Tour and The National Nine Ball Tour and having first hand ( pool ) knowledge of nearly every area of the 50 states and Canada concerning the legitimacy of raffles, auctions, etc. .. I simply wish to make you aware that raffles are not legal in all states and are in many areas illegal pursuant to many local ordinances. In many areas, the money raised from product raffles may not exceed the manufacturer's retail value and raffle ticket prices must be set at a single price, i.e., ( no discount allowed for multiple ticket purchases .. and in many instances; no commissions may be deducted from the final price ). Additionally, product raffles from your website ( as you have mentioned ) are strickly illegal in all 50 states as they are construed ( by gambling/gaming laws ) to be an illicit way for your firm to "drive" traffic to your site for the purpose of ( gambling and/or gaming ). ( Unless your site if "off-shore" )
Player auctions ( commonly known as Calcuttas ) are illegal in every state of the Union as they too are construed by either the ( gambling/gaming ) laws and/or the ( alcohol control boards ) within the states, etc. as an illicit way to drive traffic to an establishment resulting in additional sales of alcohol, etc. .. although not always enforced .. there is still a danger ... The host locales ( first ) and tournament directors ( second ) will be in potential "harm's way" if raffles, auctions, etc. are held in areas where they are illegal and/or require prior registration with the governing agency whose jurisdiction is within that area. A host locale's liquor license is in "harm's way" if a problem surfaces. ( and believe this .. it has happened before in many parts of the country ).
Obviously, your firm intends to make a profit ( and you deserve to ) and finance the tournament directors, referees, etc. from a percentage of the "entry proceeds" derived from the individuals who participate in the events .. I strongly suggest you create a host locale owner/operator board of trustees whose duties are to insure the proper oversight/management of monies and disbursement to the major events if and when they happen .. ( if you have not promoted pool in the past ... then you are in for a rude awakening when it comes to dealing with the players, host sites, sponsors, tournament directors .. and the demands for accountability that will surely come into question ).
I wish you luck ...

Greetings Mr. McChesney,

First of all - thank you for taking the time to offer your vast experience - I appreciate your input.

True - I am new to the billiards/pool scene. I have played recreationally since I was a child, and although I am not a "tournament" type player - I enjoy the game.

I own and operate several businesses at the present, one of them a travel company which is in a slump since 9/11. Back in June I watched with great interest the men's and women's BCA championships on TV and became intrigued with Pool Tournaments. In the beginning I wanted to promote a Tournament Series for the "average - everyday" pool player, but soon found that the concept we proposed excluded many players. I received many emails and phone calls requesting a Series that everyone could participate in - thus, the creation of Champions Quest.

I realize I am new to the scene, but new can be good. True - no one is aware of myself nor the Champions Quest, for we have just begun. However, I believe with the right support, a strong foundation and a well trained and motivated Team - we will succeed.

Raffles -
These are fund raisers as common as the BBQ tickets sold by groups everyday - to raise funds. I will however have our attorney check into the legalities. If they aren't a good idea - then we will scratch them from our game plan. We will not have "Calcuttas" or the like, for the reasons you have mentioned.

Profit -
Yes, we intend on producing a profit as any legitimate business desires. The % will depend on how successful we are in our marketing. However, the majority of income will be utilized to pay for the expenses of the Series (ie: Prize Fund, Player Travel, Marketing Expenses, etc.) We have set goals, a budget and a anticipated "bottom line" - which we will strive to reach.

Accountability -
Agreed! Over the past several weeks I have read and been told numerous accounts of failed accountability in certain situations. Your suggestion for a committee is valid, and we are putting into place just that - a Tournament Advisory Board (TAB).

The "TAB" will consist of 5 members (excluding myself) and an independent CPA. The responsibilities will include: Enforcement of the rules and player eligibility of the Champions Quest (CQ) Series; Review of the Budget, Checks and Balances and accountability of Funds collected within the Series; and planning of future events.

On a monthly basis, the CPA will provide a report detailing the accrued P-N-L Statement for the Series, monies in - monies out. There will be 2 bank accounts created - a general purpose account and an escrow account. All monies coming in house will be deposited into the General Purpose account - then based on the entry fees collected by every Friday - 75% will then be transferred into the Escrow Account on Monday mornings.

The Escrow Account requires 2 signatures and a unanimous vote by the TAB to have funds withdrawn. This account will be used solely for the disbursement of funds for the Prize Fund and Tournament Of Champions (TOC) expenses. After each TOC, funds left over, will be transferred back into the General Purpose Fund.

Additionally - On each Monday - the CQ Website will be updated to reflect the number of Qualifiers and Play-Ins that took place in the prior week, as well as, a running total of the funds available in the General Fund and the Escrow account. Our books will be open to anyone to inspect should they have a desire. The TAB will receive a report on Monday detailing the prior week, as well as a report by the 10th of every month detailing the prior month activity.

I am a firm believer in accountability and trust. With the "open books" - I believe we will develop the trust and respect of pool players everywhere and thus our Series will be a success.

I welcome your opinions and suggestions. Your experience and dedication to the pool community is invaluable - and we would be blessed to have you speak your mind.

Have a GREAT day!

West Coast still open - Canada still open - MidWest Still open - SouthWest still open!

Have requests from Tampa, FL. (Orlando Region); Birmingham, AL. (Nashville Region) and Jackson, MS. (Memphis and New Orleans Region) to hold qualifiers. If your pool room is near a Regional and you want to hold a Qualifier - all you need to do if have your 32 players - Build It and We Will Come!

We need our Tournament Directors in place so we can contract with the Host locations and get the Tournaments started.

I know we started late - but, I wanted to get a Series in this year, so we could have our full 3 Series schedule in 2004!

Please contact me if you can help. Champions Quest will be the "Tournament Of Choice" for years to come.

WOW - What A Day!

Had people contact me from Japan, Australia and England today asking if we could bring Champions Quest overseas! I sometimes think that I need 8 days in a week to get everything done.

UPDATE:

We had people reserve the Las Vegas, San Francisco, St. Louis and Montreal Regions - bringing our total to 20 Regions spoken for! Only 12 more Regions to go!

I hope everyone has a great holiday weekend! I'll be in the office Sunday and Monday should anyone wish to call.

Tom- Who stepped up for the "Challenge" in St. Louis and what pool hall will it be at?

Zim

Hi Zim!

Kevin Burris - aka: WoodytheLegend has taken the "challenge" for St. Louis.

I still need to fill the remaining 12 Regions! Champions Quest will be the Nation Wide Pool Tournament Of Choice, but I can't do it alone. Anyone into their local pool scene within our Regions, please drop me an email or give me a call if interested.

Players in South Bend, IN. and San Diego, CA. have expressed an interest in hosting a Qualier in their area. Qualifiers aren't limited to the Regions - just those players that advance from the Qualifiers have to travel to the nearest Regional to advance to the TOC.

Any other suggestions or recommendations are appreciated.
