Regluing the wood on the back of slate

I have a pool table that was in storage for a few months and I recently got it out of storage and I noticed that a couple of the boards on the bottom side of the slate have popped loose. What do the pro's on here recommend that I used for adhesive to reattach these boards. Also, the wood appears to be a low grade form of pine. I am considering replacement of the wood. Is there a favored type of wood? Poplar? MDF? I appreciate any advice you may be willing to give this DIY'er Thank you!

I am stapling the cloth. The wood backing is really full of staple holes from over the years and a couple of the boards popped loose. With little effort they all came off. I cut new boards using poplar. I'm assuming the manufacturer used some type of contact cement.

I changed all of the slate liners on my last table. I used poplar wood and contact cement as recommended by Mark Gregory. Just make sure all of the poplar strips are the same thickness. I ran all of mine thru a plainer just to be safe. This also assures that the poplar is flat and smooth on both sides for gluing to the slate and then mounting to the frame.

Per your advice Steve, I ran my boards through a planer to ensure that the slate would be as flat as possible on the frame. I ended up using Gorilla glue and clamped it very well. Thank you for your input Steve.

Glad it worked out for you!
