Remove Contact Cement around Leather Wrap

Hi Everyone:
I would like to know if there is a way to remove contact cement showing through the seam and around the edges of the leather wrap. Every now and then, I come across wraps like that and I would really like to know if there is a way to remove them after they are set.
Also, is there a trick to install Talisman BF tips so they do not keep mushrooming? The edge seems very fuzzy and the rim of the tip never seems to stay firm.
Thank you very much for all your help in advance.

Hello,

I do not get alot of leather wraps here in my area for repair, but do have some blanks to try out on some of My cues and would be interested in the same info. I can think of some things that would probably work, but since I have not tried them Myself, and out of the fear that they would go to deep and cause the wrap to lift I will leave that to the experts. I know some people use shoe polish to buff their leather wraps, but have no idea If this would help blend. I dought it would, and the glue probably needs cleaned first somehow. They do make contact cement remover for laminate, and have It in hardware stores, but I believe there are 2 glues used in wraps sometimes.

On the tip, Obvious Question for the fuzzies would be do you burmish the tips? On the mushrooming question- I like to use a vice on my tips to compress them before I put them on, and this helps keep the mushrooming issue down to a minimum. Ofcoarse this would change the softness of the tip, and could change It's feel and hit, so keep that in mind. We do house work, and customer repair, so we really do not want issues with mushrooming coming back. We have had one tip chip on the edge which I thought was unusual, and may be related to compressing, but small price to pay for as many tips as We do, and possibly was just a bad tip that was brittle.

Talisman Tips - from my reading

If I am not mistaken, Talisman Tips will really mushroom. I think their website even says this. The whole point of the mushrooming is that the tip sets to the stroke/power of the user. Therefore, the tip is essentially "fitted" to that particular stroke.

Given this you really have to make adjustments until the tip settles down. You can double check their website cuz i'm sure it will have a more comprehensive explanation. ;)

Thank you. I will try that. Any brand that you would recommend?
With the Talisman tips, I have tried burnishing with a piece of flat wood board on the lathe, with the tiger burnishing fluid, with wax...etc
But they almost react like a blue diamond in the sense that they keep mushrooming and there are a lot of fine "hair" around the rim. With Moori, the side just stay firm and nice. What do I need to do?
Thank you.

I've had tips that are simular in grain, some hard to trim without them fuzzen up, even with a sharp blade. I usually smoke My finger and thumb up burmishing them, but am able to get it done. Some of them will just not darken up as much, some even have layers lift off when thin. As far as the mushrooming the only thing that has worked for me is compressing them before glueing. My opinion As a Player even If the tip was harder I would rather have the tip compressed ahead of time, instead of over time, shot after shot, trimming after trimming, hitting differently as It compresses over time. I would prefer the constant feel and hit over the softness of the tip anyday. After all what player wants to be constantly battling a mushroom when they are trying to shoot. I've been there, and It's the last excuse you want when having a off shooting night. When We first started doing tip work We made the mistake of not doing this, and had mushrooms come back to us for trimming over and over. We have rarely had any since we started doing it. Matter of fact less feedback about the inconsistant feeling or hit.

I love to know if there is a better way.

There is a contact cement remover available on the market. LePage's. I use it when removing contact cement from coin op table slate. Works well.

Re Talisman tips... I have installed hundreds and they do mushroom once after installation but after that they are fine. Any of the layered tips including Moori mushroom once.
