Removing rubber from rails?

Hey all,

We are just replacing the rubber on our Black Crown and it seems to be very well adhered to the rail. Is there a trick to getting the rubber off without damaging the rail itself?

Thanks for any help...

I guess you could "cut" it off but that is a b*tch. Peel it off and if by chance the wood starts to peel with the grain, peel in the opposite direction. I bondo any gouges. Once you have all the old rubber off - sand all the old glue off, CAREFULLY as to not change the profile. I use and orbital sander, others I know use a belt sander. BTW what is a "Black Crown"? A GC III in black?

rubber

If you do not like the ideal of sanding the rails, you could use an adhesive remover. I use the product called GOO OFF you can buy it at any box store. Make sure the area is well vented and you might want to use a mask. Be very careful if you use the sanding method. As slate humper, said you can change the profile, if you are not careful.
Thanks, Ron

brush acetone where the rubber meets the wood, let it soak in, repeat if necessary. The acetone will soften the adhesive and you should be able to peel the cushion off without taking wood with it.

Hey Donny,
Does the acetone effect the glue when you are putting the new rubber on? Do you wait any specific time after removing the old rubber?
