I assume this was months ago as he hasn't answered my calls for that long. He was well known in the NYC metro area until 2000 or so for gambling and usually arguing over something stupid. He and Joe Rogan use to go at it quite a bit. He was a lock artist that had the best gambling record of anyone i know in low stakes $20- $50 matches-One pocket mostly. He made half a living just off International Sal for 3-4 years. Sal never won a single match.

An interesting character who knew all the gamblers or top players from the mid 50's through like i said 2000 or so. Port Chester Micky was a close friend. As mentioned he could be a bit cantankerous but i liked him.

Die early folks- It doesn't pay to outlive 90% of your contemporaries. No one left to give a shit about you.

Hi there,

Thanks for sharing. Ray was my grandfather. I just came across this. You describe him well :) I'd love to hear any other stories you can share about him, or lead me to anyone who can...thanks and looking forward to hearing from you

Well this is about Rogan as much as Ray. They were playing and Ray was racking and joe was complaining about the rack and Ray said "What difference does it make Joe, you cant break anyway!" This certainly pissed off Joe. They argued about it and on that break Joe slammed them and the 9 went straight in. Joe then ran around half the pool room screaming "POW!" over and over pumping his fist in the air, rubbing it in.

He used to keep a record of all his winnings in a little book and knew to the penny, how much he had won that year at any given moment. Unfortunately, all his pool room buddies are gone-the young ones from drugs and the older ones from Lung Cancer except Sal who died from butt cancer. If i think of any specific stories, ill post them here or PM you.

Generally he loved confrontation and would provoke them and bring up extremely embarrassing topics which people had thought and hoped the world forgot. Very unique guy.

PS- i never knew anyone to call him 'Fly' but i didnt meet him til 92.

He once Put Danny Cavanaugh (RIP) in a one pocket match which Danny didn't play at that time. He told Danny to take his time lining up his shot and if he saw Ray uncross or just move his leg(s), to move on to another shot -Well shot after shot, Ray is moving his legs excitedly to the point of ridiculousness. He looked like he was having restless leg syndrome from kicking heroin.

It was a bad plan-With so many possible shots , Danny almost never picked the shot Ray was thinking of and the match (cheap) was lost. The more he disliked Danny's selection, the harder and more obvious his leg kicks were. It was funny to watch.
