Robertson - Wakelin Crucible

This probably should post in snooker forum, but my questions can be answered by any cue groups.

The match is best 19 with Wakelin 9 Robertson 8. In this frame Wakelin has 40 and Neal around 10. Robertson steps up to the table with cb around baulk, pots a red and the green. Plays position down table on red. Pots the red with follow and plays position on the black. Now the black is on spot and potable but also tied up with another red. He's slightly 'high' on the black, pots it and cb moves to his left. Fine. Referee determines black spot covered by red, so spots it on pink. Fine. Neal moves around table and tries potting different red in opposite corner and misses. Wakelin ahead 40 - 18 (I think) and comes to open table. Couple shots and this frame and match should be over.

Wakelin pots red, positions and pots black on pink spot, and positions for red next to black spot. Now the referee spots black on its own spot, instead of on the pink. Wakelin is now out of position! This particular red has not moved since Neal shot the black. I think the referee is in error. After Wakelin's shot, the black should have been placed back on the pink or it should have been put on the black spot after Neal's shot. Again, this red has not moved since Neal potted the black. This changed the frame and possibly the match.

I am confused by this. I watched this several times and cannot make sense of it, unless there was a mistake. At the time, Wakelin nor the commentators made anything on this. They spoke of him in error but not the situation. Wakelin goes on to win the frame, and I am glad for him. In the postmatch interview, this was not talked of. Maybe i am missing something, but this looked wrong to me.

Sorry to make this so long. I hope some of you watch these matches. Old and new talent in a marathon. I play on a 12 ft table, and believe me, it's a long way down to the other end trying to make shots. These players are remarkable. Thanks.

Ref is FOS. Marcel? kidding

It's still on the player to protest. Has a case too. The second placement would be proof the first placement was false. Don't really know or care otherwise.

i just watched replay

the thing that fooled you fooled wakelin too

robertson’s white held the black spot
so it went to pink spot but then wakelin
assumed like you that black went to pink spot
but the black spot was open

see? one thing i’ve learned about the complex snooker rules is that if there is any controversy i won’t be the only one to notice, meaning if the ref made a blunder it would be all over the news

I owe the ref an apology. I watched again with fresh eyes and saw something new. When Neal shot black, the cb moved slightly left but it did not travel far enough to clear the black spot. So at that time, it was actually the cb covering the spot, NOT the red. It’s something hard to pick up on tv, but I believe mystery solved.

I apologize to everyone. Please forgive me. Thanks.

Thanks for your response. I just now read the forum and I agree with you. Again, it was hard to pick up on tv. I was sure there would have been an immediate correction with all the eyes watching every move. That’s why I watched it again as I knew I had to be missing something. My bad..
