room owners and tournaments

Do room owners typically make a decent profit from holding a tournament promoted by someone else in their room? I've heard that the promoters get the "greens fees", and the room owner is supplied with a "package" of stuff to sell in order to make any money. Is publicity and snack/vending sales (if you don't sell liquor) enough to make it worthwhile? After all, the tables will be tied up for a day or so and the regular customers might not appreciate the inconvenience. Or am I way off base?

they break even mostly....if a room owner does not provide food for sale, toruneys are not being maximized. They are kinda like "loss leaders" you see in store sales. The merchant offers something very cheap, with little or no mark-up (lotteries are an example) to generate traffic into his establishment. Once they're in your room-it's up to you to sell them somethin'!

I think tournaments also draw new players to a room that otherwise would never try it. My favorite place is now more than 30 miles away from home. There are at least 10 rooms closer than that, but this one is the one I like best. I never would have tried it if they didn't have a lot of tournaments there.
