Rules/strategy question

Greetings snooker-knowledgeable people,

I'm watching World Championship Snooker, Day 5's matches: Allen vs. Stevens.

Thirty-two minutes into frame 10, with one red left on the table, Matthew Stevens fouled and left Mark Allen snookered on the last red, fairly close in behind the green. This gave Mark Allen a free ball, no? Mark just gave the table back to Stevens to play on from the snooker. Why, instead, didn't Mark Allen nominate the green as his free ball, and push up right behind it, and then give back the table to Stevens with a much more difficult snooker?

Thanks.

If i remember right, only situation you can make snooker behind nominated free ball is when there is only black and pink left on table (behind black in that case)

Pecca is correct. In this situation, snookering behind a nominated free ball (intentional or otherwise) is a foul and would have left Matthew with a free ball instead.

Thanks guys. I figured that this couldn't be an oversight by Mark Allen, that there must be some rule involved.

Mark went on to squeak out a first round win. I'm only on Day 6 of my tournament viewing (via BBC iPlayer), so I look forward to his progress.

Thanks, again.
