Russian Pyramid and/or 72mm balls on Regular Pool Table???

Couple of questions on the topic....

1) I know the tables are totally different, but has anyone played on an 8' table using the large 68/72mm balls? How is it?

2) What are those things called that have a spring in them that you put on the sides of the pockets to make them smaller? I saw them many years ago used for practice, but can't seem to find them now.

3) Any idea of where to even get the larger 72mm balls? Seems like Aramith makes a set, but no one online sells it except one place that wants like $300 for it. I tried searching for over an hour, but NOTHING! Zilch! Nada! Seems like no one on the internet sells them.

yep that's what i was able to find as well....I just can't bring myself to pay $300 for a set of balls...i also emailed the guy on ebay and he has no clue what size they are or who makes them so they are worth about $20 which I don't really want either.
 
62 mm = 2 7/16" approximately
72 mm = 2 7/8"

The differences are substantial so simply ask him to measure.

The box on Ebay that contains the Pyramid balls appears to be from a set that was probably made in China. I have a set of Billiard balls with the same box design and they say "made in China" They are sometimes referred to as "Standard Pool balls." You can buy a set of "Standard pool balls" for about $35.00 from some places on the net. I would guess that these are 72 mm and worth about 20 - $50.00 (at most)

BTW the set of billiard balls I have are good quality and do everything I need on my 9' Gold Crown III.

he doesn't know 68 or 72mm....not like it even really matters to me, but still

i was more interested if anyone has ever tried it and whether it's a completely dumb idea or kinda works
 
Seems to me that it is a whole diffeent game. 72mm balls would have the center hit above the rail. Standard pool balls hit below the rail. A pyramid table (you can see some videos on the net) have pockets with less room than they would have on a current pool table with 4.5" pockets. So I would guess it is a bastard game that would not compare to Russin pyramid in many ways.

I have lots of toys for my table but this would not be one of them. I might be more inclined to buy several sets of billiard balls for a game that might compare to pyramid on my table.
 
ohhhh excellent point with the rails....i wonder of the balls would have a tendency to go flying off the table if the center-line is above the rail.

run that last thought by me again. what do you mean "buy several sets of billiard balls for a game that might compare to pyramid on my table."???
 
Billiard balls are 62 mm (?) and hit the center of the rail. Thus they should play similar to Pyramid balls on a their 12' foot tables.

The pockets would be too big and portable shims would be needed to reduce the pocket opening.

So if I had five or six sets of billiard balls they should be similar in play to a set of Pyramid balls. Numbering might be a problem but that is no big issue if I just wanted something similar to Pyramid.
 
The spring loaded things are called pocket shrinkers. You should be able to find them for about $40.
