I believe there are two ways of calculating the graining of the sandpaper. "Normal" sandpaper only goes to about 1200 or 1400. The other papers you can find which go up to 12000 use a different calculating technique IMO. I pretty sure the old technique is calculating the number of grains in a square centimeter, I suspect the newer papers count the number of grains per gram perhaps? I'm not sure, but the 12000 sandpaper isn't much finer then the 1200. Just my 2 cents.

I believe you are right. The numbers that Micro Mesh uses are exagerated, IMO. There is an equivalency chart at their website.
