Schon shafts

What's your opinion on the quality/playability of Schon shafts? I just got a new Schon shaft recently (4.5oz!) and it was pretty rough when I got it. By rough I mean that I had to sand it from 800-2000 grit to get it to where I wanted it, and where the cutter marks were hardly visible. These cutter marks were so noticeable that the shaft almost looked like it was made of curly maple. Anyway, some sanding was done and the relatively minor issue was resolved.

Initial aesthetics aside, the shaft played pretty well for me. I generally have the opinion that one shaft isn't better than another, each individual shaft just plays differently. I eventually replaced the stock ferrule and tip with a new micarta ferrule and a Kamui medium tip. The shaft now plays closer to how I want it. Deflection isn't necessarily a bad thing if you can compensate for it, so I won't raise this as an issue.

Care to share your thought and comments on Schon shafts? Thanks

I have 4 shafts for my schons and they all have the same taper or very close.3 Schon and 1 nova(Nubs Wagner).2 Schon and nova are 12.75 and the other Schon is 12.00 and they all have medium LePro tips

Of the 12.75 1has a micarta ferulle/1 ivory/1 whatever Schon put on them in 1999.
When I use any of the 12.75 on my R-1(1990 not 80) I cant tell them appart.
When I use them on my SP98-6 I cant tell them appart.
But I can definetly tell the difference in the 2 cues
I have never shot with any of the LD shafts So I really dont have an oppion on them nor do I use my 12.0mm shaft much to really say

As for playability I love mine but my oppinion is kind of 1 sided since I really only shot with these cues.I dont count the quality cue with the 8 ball on it I bought at a bowling alley or the meucci I had in the 80's

Lately I've seen some shafts from some lower end Schons that were pitiful ... One guy had me condition and put a finish on the shaft cause there was none ... 5 growth rings per inch ... That's a reject in most cases ...

Well, I agree with Eric there. I did a shaft recondition for a fellow and I experienced the same thing. 4-5 growth rings as well. I think the production depends greatly on taper and ferrule/tip gimmick. They advertise the ferrule to be a proprietary made ferrule that is supposed to hit like ivory. They also have a so called 'proprietary' tip. I think it is just a lepro or something very similar.

As far as the Schon shafts, it is the brass insert that snugs up perfectly into the joint collar. That last 1-2 revolutions seals up the connection to a pretty tight fit. Also, you can't use Schon shafts on a Joss or even a good amount of other 5/16x14 cues. To me, Mezz has outdone Schon in just about every way especially the joint department. They have the united joint and that last 3-4 revolutions require some grip pressure to crank down it.

I got a Schon through Seyberts before, and the cue had a taper roll. I called them and told them the problem. He said it was because it was not the original shaft for that butt. He said it was not possible to locate the original shaft to the butts, cause they are all the same. It would seem to me though, that you got a slightly unfinished shaft, or a used shaft being how it was rough feeling. Any brand new Schon shaft I've ever seen was smooth to the touch. I bet that micarta ferrule and Kamui is a great playing shaft. I personally would've gone with ivory, but micarta is my 2nd favorite!
