I thought that was the purpose of getting two shafts with a cue. That way you have a backup shaft and don't have to switch whole cues. Then again, if you're prone to wrapping your cue around a pole or snapping it on a table then it might be good to have a backup cue...lol. :D
 
I've always thought of a back-up cue as one that is inconspicuous, or not as noticeable, like a rather plain cue or a sneaky pete. One that you take into places where you may not want to pull out a thousand dollar cue.
