scratch vs crack in ferrule

Any guidelines on how to tell whether a vertical blemish in a ferrule is a crack or just a scratch? I just received a used predator bk and my novice eyes cannot tell the difference. I tried taking a pic but I cannot get a clear enough picture to post.
Thanks

If it is not obvious the only sure way I know is to take the tip off (assuming the line ends at the tip) and face the ferrule. If it is cracked you will see the crack go right through the ferrule.

An initial less invasive way of possibly telling, would be to check the crack with a 10x power loupe or use magnifying glasses. You can sometimes see how deep the mark is. If you are still not able to determine if it is a crack or not, then I agree with Roy that taking off the tip is the way to go.

I bought a pair of 30x jeweler's loupes for less than $9.50 plus shipping off of eBay recently. You can see very clearly if it is a crack or scratch with one of these loupes. Here is a link to another auction running for exact loupes I received recently. I have no affiliation with this sale, just trying to help others solve a problem with a resource. Hope this helps.
