Sealed Shaft?

I posted this on ask the cuemaker as well, but there doesn't seem to be much traffic over there.................

Hello all,
I just recently had my shaft cleaned/bleached and sealed by Scott Sherbine at Proficient Billiards and he did a great job. My question/problem is that I don't think it was sealed before and it always remained really smooth during play ( all I had to do was wipe it with a towel once in awhile). Now that it is sealed it seems to attract dirt, hand oil, chalk, etc. and it feels dirty after only a short amount of play (a few racks). Can I use some 1500 grit sandpaper to remove the seal and restore it like it was before?(by hand without a lathe) Or will this ruin the shaft or reduce the diameter? I really hate having to wipe it down or wash my hands every few shots. So, will sanding produce the desired results? Yea or nay......all advice is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
David

i think sealed shafts suck for those reasons, sanding will reduce the diameter but only a few thousandths of an inch, i wouldnt use 1500 myself. 400 or so.and screw payin someone to bleach it, if you use baking soda on a rag with some water to clean the shaft the granuels will get the chalk and dirt out of the pores. -just my opinion-

Sealing shafts

I clean and seal my shafts. I sand with a little 600 grit, just to remove the shine. I apply Hightower shaft cleaner and let it dry. This brings most of the dirt and chalk to the surface. I will sand lightly with 600 again. I seal the shaft with wood sealer. I then sand the stickyness off with 1500, burnish with 20,000, and apply shaft wax. All I ever have to do is wipe with damp cloth or paper towel and dry. I have shafts that were done in 99 that look almost new.

Oh, I have a lathe.

What is 20,000? would'nt that be about the courseness of typing paper? If not smoother? Just curious.

David

I got the 20,000 from a jeweler. They use it to shine gold. He gave me about 20 sheets that I have cut into 3 inch squares. Smooth as a new born babys ass.
Don P. Yep, the lathe helps.

Shawn, A shaft that has no sealer is opened up to the elements, [moister and whatever].

Any type of abrasive cleaner is not good for shafts. All shafts need to be sealed. In the process of cleaning, with 600 grit paper, if done correctly ,[sa Don pointed out] will not hurt the shaft and or reduce the size. Bleach and water, is another, no no. Use a good furniture pad system, or some type of polish, that's mad for woods.

The way I see it, to hell with wasting time by going to a jeweler and getting 20,000 grit if you have a newborn around the house. Just hold that little sucker up to the shaft lightly while it's spinning around in the old lady's mouth as she's bitchin' and moanin' about the garbage or something, in lieu of a lathe, and........VOILA!

That don't work

I have tried that, it don't work. My ol'lady don't bitch much anyway, does a lot of moaning though. Maybe that's why she don't bitch. Give it a try. The guy with the 20,000 grit brought it over one day, I didn't have to go get it. Lucky me!! I ain't going to say anything about spinning any shaft around in her mouth either. I like things just the way they are.

Wanna switch pardners for a few days? It breaks my heart to see a fellow man who's forgotten the wonderful joys of bitchin'. I can go with moaning only for a while. BTW, you can spin a shaft in hers while she's on loan, you have my permission. Your life is in your own hands though.

Sorry

Sorry, I think I will stick with my lathe, lady, and free 20,000 grit burnishers.
It's kinda like cars, I don't let anybody take mine for a spin. Thanks for the offer though.

Hi David, I to, think the ask cuemakers should be on the main board.
I think it was a big mistake on Mike's part moving it over. We had many good discusions from the start. now it's slowed down to nothing much.

Your problem with the now sealed shaft could be caused by the sealer he used. If it wasn't the right stuff, [wax or some sort of oil base] you got dirt, grit, and all kinds of stuff sticking to it.
The juice i use, [secrect] , is an oil base or petrolume based product. however, the way it's applyed, is , rub it in, rub it off, and polish with a little 600 grit wet/dry, paper, [in dry form only], and then burnish with leather. Burnish a lot. But take it easy and do not get the shaft to hot, or it will warp later on. Just warm it up, and repeat this 4 or 5 times over about 20 minutes or so. Then, follow my steps posted before. Lightly moisted soft cloth, wipe down the sgaft, then dry soft cloth wipe very fast and with lots of pressure.
From then on, wash your hands often, keep your shaft clean.

Can and or will anyone expose what the "juice I use, [secret]" is. In other words is there a product other than Unique Products shaft sealer than I can or should use to seal my shaft.

Depends on what feel or sensation you're looking for...Trojan ribbed might do it OK, but one of my favorites has always been 4XXXX. Try either one.....
