Shaft incert

I think all the ones I have worked on have been 5/16-18. Even the ones that came out with the dual threads I think were the same on the inner set. The outer set would be also 18 per inch but I don't know the diameter.
Good luck Mike Gatzke

The external threads are 7/16 x 14
The internal threads are 5/16 x 18.
The insert itself is 1" long.
If you are going to use it on a Viking handle, you'll have to bore the id of the insert slightly to accept the Viking Quick Release pin. Measure the diameter of the blank section of the pin (the top half) & that will give you the diameter that you'll need to bore. Once you have the shaft spinning true & centered in the chuck, you can drill it as well.

The dual threaded insert

Is also 18TPI ! Gatzge is not referring to the od and thread that is mated into the wood of the shaft and epoxied in place. But rather a gimic Viking used awhile back that has two male threads on the shaft insert to engage on both the pin and the threaded inside neck of the Stainless Steel butt collar at the same time! They have to be the same thread pitch in order to screw together as the shaft and butt are mated. A real PIA ! IMHO.

Thanks everyone. I just didn't know it the incert was 5/16-16 or 18. Now I know. Insert has been glued in and shaft sanded to specks. Thanks
