I can't get my calipers that read in .001" to move after putting on a tip. They read the same. I don't sand off the last little bit. I trim the tip down with the lathe tool until it is .010" or so oversize to the ferrule. Then I trim the last little bit off with a utility knife while the cue is spinning. I only touch the edge a second or so with 400, 600 or 800 grit sandpaper. I then shape the tip, touch the edge with 800 or 600 grit, burnish the edge touch the tip crown with 120 grit and I am done. The utility blade may be what is making the difference in how much ferrule is being sanded off. The utility blade cuts that last little bit off real flush with the ferrule. The sand paper is just to smooth up the edge of the tip and remove any glue from the ferrule.
