If you take down the taper of a 314 2 and make it closer to a Z shaft, does the 314 lose its effectivness? Is it better to just go with the Z? I have a friend who really likes the 314, but has small hands and says that it is hard to close bridge with it. He wants to take it down, but is afraid that it will lose its desired effectivness. Can anyone with knowledge help? Thanks.

I think you better change ferrules before turning it down that much. Better to buy a Z-2 if you want one. I myself love the feeling of a medium thick shaft. 12.75 - 12.5.

If you take it down as is, chances are the ferrule will be too thin.

The ferrule sitting on a Predator is a part of the tech, please search and you will find.

I turned one down to Z shape about 3 years ago, used it for six monthes,
and sold the cue to a friend. He's still playing with it.
It's from a sneaky spjl that was built in the falcon op center.
I'll measure it tomorrow.

I'm not sure i'd want to turn a 12.75mm shaft down to the 11.8mm size of a Z shaft. It might work OK, but that's making the wall thickness behind the ferrule pretty thin. Maybe it would be better to sell the 314 2 and just buy a new Z2 shaft. This is just my opinion for what it's worth.....

I was wondering the same thing about an ob1. I like my shafts thin but was wondering if turning down the shaft would do away with the effectiveness.
 
It doesn't lose it effectiveness but you have to be really careful because of how the ferrule is constructed.

There seems to be a core to the ferrule with a sheath around it. On a 314-2 I had that was accidentally taken down to 12.18 mm because of cleaning excessive cleaning, the outer sheath cracked and a big piece broke off. It still shot/played great but the broken area annoyed me. I am not sure if the ferrule broke because it was from the batch of shafts that had faulty ferrules or because of size but I baby them now and never break with them because of how much of a PITA it is to get them repaired.

If you have it taken down that much, be VERY VERY VERY careful and, IMHO, absolutely do not break or try jumping with it.

I now have 2 new 314-2 shafts and have had them taken down to about 12.4 mm and will be very judicious about cleanings.

I am even considering getting MAQ 4 shaft(s) from Mike Gulyassy with Uni Loc joints. The big factor there is what kind of ferrule they have. If they have some similar PITA ferrule, I won't. But if they use a more traditional ferrule that can be replaced anywhere, I am definately going to buy at least 1 when I get my stimulus package check in the mail in May.
