shaft thickness and table size

OK, last tuesday before a tournament i was practicing with a friend on a 9ft. So i grabbed my Meucci w/ the 12mm shaft, well as i was playing i started to notice alot of shaft flex when i would try to put low english on the cue.

Then last nite, i was playing on a 9ft and grabbed my other meucci w/ the 13mm shaft and everything seem'd to play easier. and noticed hardly any shaft flex. Now maybe its just me and i havent noticed this before, but it got me thinking about how much this is going to affect the hit on the cue ball.

Now i really like playing with the 12mm shaft Meucci expecially on a 7ft, but is it bad to switch to the 13mm Meucci when i goto a 9ft?

does anyone else do stuff like this?

the thinner shaft is naturally going to flex more than the 13. and they are going to play differently. decide which one feels more comfortably in your bridge and learn with that. going up and down a millimeter like that is going to change things like the squirt on the cue ball.

mentally it also gives you an excuse. if you don't play as well, half way through a match you may start telling yourself "its the shaft" and then you deem it acceptable to keep on playing bad.

consistency is the goal of every player, and the less things you change, the less variables you have.

tap, tap, tap.
don't change shafts, get comfortable with one. Love it through good times and bad. Sickness and in health.....per se. My biggest mistake as a beginner was that I thought that the "bling" (cues) dictated how I played....6 years later and I'm wiser and a better player for just sticking with one cue.

oh, also, once you've decided what the optimal shaft is for you........get an exact copy of it for a back up. i made the mistake of not having a picture perfect backup this weekend...........i ended up dinging my shaft bad, and had to play with it even though it felt like shit because my backup was a half millimeter thicker and felt like a tree trunk.

ok, my i have two Meucci Originals, they both play the same, so its not really that big of a deal.

Now the one i recently acquired has two 12mm shafts. I had been using this one only when playing on a 7ft table. And played pretty well with it.

the other one i bought back in June 04 came with a original 10mm shaft lol (snooker) and two NEW 13mm shafts.

and to Vap, yes i know what you mean by people thinking the bling bling Cue makes them play better, I usta have a 1000$ Schon LTD, had it for 4 yrs, and of course didnt really play much with it, but i thought i was the Shyt lol. Well, with my 350$ Meucci Original, i have won more money, and play better, of course i also practice several times a week too, and play tournaments too.

But yes i know several guys who have bought a new cue thinking it will make them play better lol.

But,,, a better cue, like Schon, Predator, Peachaur, and so on, when you learn to play with the cue, you get a more consistent hit.

But the weird thing, is on a 7ft, i could switch to my other Meucci, and be totally comfortable with it, go figure lol.

there are a few reasons for this............one, the average shot on a 7 foot table is proabably about 3 feet or less.........two, most 7 ft tables have larger pockets..........three, you don't have to move the rock around the table as much, therefore you don't really have to "stroke" as much on a 7 ft table. if you have to travel up and down the table thats only 14 ft, where on a 9 ft table that same stroke would barely get you down and halfway back. all of these things also add up to the most important thing, CONFIDENCE, seems that most people are more confident on the smaller table, and that comes from all of the reasons i just listed. going from a 9 ft to a 7 ft you should feel comfortable shooting with the leg off of one of your dining room chairs........LOL

try changing to a shaft thats a millimeter smaller on a 9 ft table and see what happens to your stroke. it may not change much, but i'll go out on a limb here and say that you're going to have major difficulty with the shots that require you to really "stroke" the cue.

in the end it all comes down to a matter of personal preference, feel, and comfort. if switching shafts works for you.........more power to you, keep it up. if it doesn't get a few shafts made the same way and just play with that kind of shaft.

Ya know last Tuesday or Weds i brought both my Meucci's to the pool hall and played on one of the 9ft tables for about 2 hrs. First started off with the 13mm shaft, and was doing ok. Nothing great just practicing. Well after an hour i switched to the other Meucci with the 12mm shaft, and actually played better, and seemed to be able to move up n down the table better. Maybe its just me lol

Anyways, it all doesnt matter anymore because come April, i am buying a Schon again lol, ( i was tempted by the darkside again ) And then getting ride of my two Meucci's so i cant go back n forth anymore.
