Congratulations Shaun Murphy who has beaten Matthew Stevens 18-16 to win the title at Sheffield this evening.

Shaun, who amazingly had to go through 2 qualifying rounds to get to the Cruicible, played some fantastic Snooker to capture the title and the £250,000 ($500,000) prize money.

It was a fantastic night what with it being the last World Championship with the sponsor of Embassy. Before the evening session, former World Champions were announced and brought out before the crowd to a standing ovation. The likes of Steve Davis, Cliff Thornburn, Ray Reardon and Stephen Hendry were welcomed before the final session kicked off.

Embassy have put in around £23 million over the past 30 or so years in the World Championships, it is sad to see them go, and hopefully the World Championships will find another fantastic sponsor who will keep the sort of prize money in the game we have seen in the past.

Congratulations to Shaun Murphy, his first title and
it's the Embassy!
I understand that he was ranked #48 going in to the
event and will be ranked #21 for the next season.
I was wondering if anyone has ever won the Embassy
and not been in the top 16 the next year?

I believe Terry Griffiths is the only other winner of the title who had to qualify.

Normally the top 16 are seeded through to the final stages of the tournaments a year later, but Shaun will actually be seeded through aswell, even though he isn't in the top 16, this could mean that Steve Davis, who was on the brink of exiting the top 16 this year, might have to qualify for the events next season!

The only thing that might save Steve Davis or
whoever is #16 is if Ronnie makes good on his claim
that he is not playing for a year. Then everyone
wil move up one seed for tournaments even though
Ronnie will still be ranked #1 for the season.
Also Paul Hunter at #4 or #5 may not play do
to his illness, so it should be very interesting to
see what happens.
