Shop Safety

Up until today I had two of those coiled yellow air hoses (200 psi rating). Both were "cheap" but from different sources. I had one out in the garage (unheated) and the other in the shop (heated). I went to pick up the one in the garage that had been laying there a couple of days. I grabbed the hose behind the connection to the gun and the hose snapped. There was no air to the tool or it could have been exciting as this compressor normally has the air pressure set to between 100-150 psi. Thinking this was a fluke (as in something cracked the hose and I just didn't notice) I disconnected the still good end from the air complressor and since the hose was a loss anyhow tried to bend it. Got less than a 45 degree bend and it snapped too. WTF????

It's been cold here the last couple of days (in the teens and twenties) so I thought that might be what caused it but to be on the safe side I decided to check out the other hose in the shop. Same results. All the breaks were kind of splintery with little pieces of shrapnel flying off from the point of the breaks.

Since I've seen pics of a number of shops where similar looking hoses are being used I thought I would give you guys a heads up on what could be a problem if one of these breaks and gets away under full load.

Now I get to research for replacements as they are very handy and I really don't stumbling over hoses laying on the floor.

Generally those are made from thin plastic. I personally would never use them for anything.
