I am considering buying a used Shopsmith mark 5. With about 10 addition attachments and about a million more available for it. Can these be used sucessfully in cue building? I am not buying it for that sole purpose, but I want to know if it would be useful. Any thoughts?

If the lathe is sufficiently fast enough and long enough you need one for sanding. You need a band saw and they have that as an attachment. Other than that I would say they would be about useless in cue making. The can do boring but not accurate enough for cue making.

My expirence with them is limited but they are the swiss army knife of woodshops. They perform many functions but do not preform any perfectly. I think you would be happier with purpose built machines. Chris.

Thank you Chris. I do need input. I am also considering this for a lot of other wood working needs. If I can used for cue repair/ matience thats just added value.

They spin plenty fast for sanding, but like any other wood lathe, are limited as far as cue building. They have no hole through the spindle. Tons of variable speed power. To sum it up, you can make almost anything with them, except a pool cue. I have one for sale in Maryland, cheap.
