Rumour (from an excellent source) has it that the owners of my home poolroom are going to purchase 6 brand new Gold Crowns by this summer. These tables we be only available for usage to members,or anyone challenging a member and will be used exclusivly for our Sunday tournaments.I'll believe it when I see it, as we only have 4 good tables out of about 24 right now.

No doubt they will purchase plain jane commercial grade tables.Out of all the Gold Crowns available, which models(1,2 3, 4 etc etc) are the best that fit this catergory.

Just asking as I plan to relay this info over to the owners just in case that they haven't placed the order yet.I've heard before that there are certain Gold Crowns that are less desirable. Any Input appreciated.RJ

.....I'm getting excited with eager anticipation as our pool hall is the biggest (best location) in Vancouver and this upgrade is long overdue.

The Gold Crown 1, 2, & 3's are from times past! The only ones made now are the Gold Crown 4's. There are pro's and cons to these tables as some people will tell you, but the important thing is to have them set up properly from the "get-go"! This is often not the case, unfortunately. The GC IV's have a very slick leveling system that does not require shims or wedges. This can be a real plus!

Thanks for the info. Shows you how much I know about Gold Crowns.

The last person who changed the rails,re-felted the tables was an inexperienced handyman. He did an OK job other than making the side pockets far to tight on one table. I will tell the owners the importance of the intial set up and hopefully they will put up the additional$$$ to get somone with some great experience. RJ.

I'd like to know which place has 24 tables. Can't be Guy's and Dolls. Commodore? I doubt the owners there will be willing to spring for gold crowns, but I could be wrong. Come to think about it, Commodore fits your description. 4 good tables (4 decently good dufferin tables at the front) and Sunday tournaments (which Commodore has).

Yes it's the Commodore. And if the owners there really do in fact invest in 6 new Gold Crowns.....I'll believe it when I see it.They ,apparentley are certainley wealthy enough to do so,however, if they spend the money it remains to be seen. They most definitly have a reputation for being tight fisted.......and that's why they're wealthy...LOL.

It would be great if there was at least one pool room in Vancouver with quality tables.Guys and Dolls has potential with their older models gold crowns, however,Tony is making no money there and can't afford to give them all a much needed(re-cloth,new rails etc) upgrade. The rails (as far as diamond systems go) are really innaccurate and kick shots come up shorter than anywhere I've ever seen on a three rail kick.

Tony bought all those Gold Crowns second hand and got them for a steal from a pool hall that went tits up in the USA.When I first heard that the Commodore was getting six Gold Crowns,I thought that they must have found a simuliar great deal somewhere, however Claude the handyman says that the owners told him they were getting brand new ones.

Next time I go there,I'll ask the owners directly.RJ

I've to go check the place out after they got the tables. I stopped going there after they jacked the prices up, and pretty much drove a big chunk of the players out. A good place for pool playing in Vancouver is the Automotive in Yaletown now. There's virtually no good players that visit the place often though. The place's a lot quieter than most other pool halls (they don't blast the annoying music all the time), the tables aren't too cramped in (you'll still get the occasionaly deadspot on a couple of the tables), and the tables are all nicely kept (all are like the good ones at Commodore). The place's a bit more expensive than Commodore/Guy's n. Doll's, but I'm willing to pay a bit extra to have a good playing environment. You just need to bring your buddy with you if you like to find some playing partners.

I talked to the owners today.

It's official, they'll be getting 6 brand new Gold Crowns by August and will also be re-doing the bowling lanes.A Brunswick representitive will be coming in to make sure the tables are initially set up properly.

Get a membership at the Commodore and you only pay half price.Play there for awhile and you'll end up with virtually a free lifetime membership. The place has it's drawbacks, however, there's at least 10 A level players there who present me with a good challenge.RJ

I used to get the memberships there. Is it still 30 or 50 bucks for 3 months? Do they still charge you double at nights, even if you're just practicing by yourself? 3 years ago I spent a whole year playing primarily at Commodores, but I stopped playing pool that regularly.
