Slate/Wood/Slate?

I was hoping someone here could help shed some light for me. I was gifted a pool table from the late 60's/early 70's by a colleague at work who identified it as a Brunswick Classic. From all of the research I've been done so far, I've not come across a Brunswick Classic model. The closest resemblance I've been able to find is the Brunswick Yorktown.

Anyhow, I started to disassemble it so I could refinish the wood and give it a general tune-up, etc. and noticed that it seems to be a one-piece 1/4 slate, braced with wood, which is then braced with another one-piece 1/4 slate. Now, I haven't yet taken the felt off the table entirely, but I'm fairly confident that this is the build. I've gone near mad trying to find out anything about this construction and have come up empty, so I thought I'd try my luck here.

Unfortunately, I don't have pics as of this moment, but I'd be glad to take some if it will help someone explain the construction to me. I'm starting to wonder if this is even slate!

Okay, so sounds like this may be one of those asbestos or formica tables. If I can find slate slabs from another Brunswick pool table (different model) of the same size, could I retrofit the slate in? If not, should I just dump the table all together?

table

Does it look honeycomb? Brunswick used that on a few tables instead of slate..
I think you are not understanding the build of the table if you haven't taken the rails and felt off to see what you expose..
Take the rails and bed cloth off, then you will understand a little more..keep us posted on what you find'
-do you understand how the rails are attached?
+pictures do help

IMO there is no concerns when it is together. I am always cautious when working on them making sure not to disturb the bed by scraping or sanding and always washing my hands when done.

It would be a fine table for the kids to bang balls around but i just would not put any money into one. Good quality slate tables are being had for a few hundred bucks. A gold crown was on craigslist for 300 dollars!
