Smart Shaft is more front heavy than a 314...

Aa someone who loves new technology and cues, I went out to get a smart shaft and have tried it for a little bit.

I think it is more front balanced than a 314. It feels more solid. It seems to help me with a lot of power shots because of the little bit more weight in the front. I feel that I am also getting more stability with the Smart shaft, and it does not have much squirt at all.

I am still waiting for my OB 1 shaft. I am hoping to compare them because I am so curious.

Does any of you tried the Smart shaft and what do you think about it?

Thank you.

Richard

I liked the Universal Smart Shaft (USS) but it was a little heavy for my tastes, and was throwing off the balance of my cue.

My two most commonly used playing shafts are 3.7 ounces a piece; 12.1 mm diameter, with a 15" pro taper.

The USS is at 12.75 mm, with a shorter taper and weighs in at 4.3 ounces -- considerably more heavy than my other shafts, causing the balance of the cue to be redistributed. So while I like the way it plays itself, I don't like how it makes my cue balance out.

That being said, I'm having it taken down a few and having the taper lengthened. It'll probably bring it in around 3.9 ounces. I'll let you know what my impressions are afterwards.

Well, Good luck.

I like a shaft slightly over 4 oz and a stiffer shaft but I know some players like a lighter shaft. The 314 feels too light and too soft for me, and the Z is stiffer but too light. I like what I have now, and I can't wait to try the OB 1.

Do you have the low deflection version? I think the ferrule is quite thin on that shaft so you may want to be a bit more careful with turning it down.

It's the joint system that makes the shaft weigh considerably more than a standard shaft, you might relieve some weight by lenthening the taper but not by as much as you would hope for.

I'm considering one myself and can tell you, from talking to Drivermaker, the shaft is 4.5 oz. He measured it on his equipment that he uses for golf clubs and said it's so accurate he could measure a fart :D
I will definitely go with the RD version as the LD would be more for people who like Predator shafts.

I have tryed the universal Low squirt shaft. Man I hated the shaft I thought it was super heavy talk about messing up a balance point. The shaft was stiffer that a metel rod with a super hard moori on it.I thought it hit kinda dead feeling to.I tryed the reg squirt and thought that it hit much better. The ferrules on the shafts were cool they stayed clean no matter how sloppy ya chalked your cue.I am not a fan of heavey shaft's. They just deflect to much for me it seems, even no I like a metel jointed cue for the front weight.I also think ivory hits bad to, heavey and dont like the way it deflects or the sound. . All just my opinion ya have to use what works for you!

Yes, I have the Low Squirt version of the shaft. I was told by Cue & Case that 12.25 was fine. however, I am slightly skeptical of this.

But due to the fact that it's done nothing but collect dust in my case for the past 4 months (after going back to good ol' custom maple shafts) I figure that if turning it down damages the shaft, oh well. It'll be broken and sitting around, compared to just sitting around. The net effect on me is zero.

Is it really the joint system? The adapter is pretty light and is made of plastic. I can't imagine it adds much weight to the shaft.

That is only one side of the adapter, there is the other side that is installed into the shaft which would also add weight. Who knows, I could be totally wrong and piezo electric fabric might weigh a ton.

im very curious to see the difference between the OB1 and the uss... if anyone has both of them PLZ tell us how they compare :D

It would be nice if you would add another column showing the diameter of the shafts you have tested.

Joey,

Hope you are well!

Good suggestion, we have planned to do this, just haven't gotten around to it. I can tell you that the shafts tested were tested at the diameter taht they came from their respective manufacturer.

We will add the actual diameters tested soon though.

and the weight, and the tip used.

The weight of the shafts vary, the cue weight tested is not relevant to these results (testing a heavier or light butt on the same shaft did not effect the cueball deflection produced)

The tips tested were the exact tip that came stock with the shaft tested. The tip curvatures where also left alone (we tested what was sent) but the radius is mentioned on our test results (dime/radius/nickel)
