I've just finished two cues for the kids (9 and 12 y.o.) I coach. As usual I had some fun and got some new experience trying certain things for the first time.
I always test my cues at the table and it was very informative experience this time. The reason being…both butts came out exactly the same natural weight of 435 gramms and balance. Both were built using the same construction on a full length maple core (out of the same board, same dimensions, taper etc.). The major difference is in the wood's combo for the forearms/segmented handles/butt sleeves.
Long story short … I've tested both butts switching the shafts between them. Well … all I can tell the butt does matter and it is not just about the weight/balance like so many believe.
Both play good and solid but man I just love the hit of that one with purple heart handle and pretty rare african wood at the forearm/butt sleeve (my friend musician introduced it to me and helped to get). It just stands out in such a way … that's what I love about working with woods that have certain character comparing to cf for example.
Looking forward to see some joy in the kid's eyes soon).
