Spotting balls

Pardon my total ignorance of this part of the game, but I have a question related to gambling...

when playing, say, 9-ball, and someone spots you the last two balls, does that mean that you are just shooting for the 7 as if it were the 9, but your opponent is shooting the 9?

and what happens if you shoot the 8 or 9?

how does spotting balls work in other games, as well?

as you can tell, i don't really gamble... just curious about the propositional games like this.
 
Normally, when a player is given the last two balls it would mean that if one of the last two balls remaining on the table is make, that player wins. It doesn’t necessarily have to be the 8 and 9 ball, it could be the 2 and 9. You can still win by pocketing the 9 ball at any time.

When i Play and I ahve to spot people in 9 ball it is normally called in a pocket. But the other player can make your spot balls in and then you have to shoot for the 9. Also if your spot ball is made on the break after the player is done shooting that ball gets spoted on the table if the shooter does not run to your spot ball. that might be a lil confusing but thats how we play.
 
yeah, chuck, i don't quite get that...

so, if i'm playing someone, and they spot me the 8, i'm shooting for the 8 instead of the 9. but if they drop the 8, i'm back to shooting for the 9? and if the 8 drops on the break, it gets spotted, unless the person runs out 1-7...

and, in the same scenario, i win by dropping the 8 or the 9?
