Started charging without posting

I've been playing in a weekly Monday Night 8 Ball Tournament for years.
Lately the prize money has decreased.
I figured out over the last couple of weeks and it seems that the House started charging 20% without telling anyone.
Since it was always known that all money taken was paid in prizes, should we have been told it was changing?
It does seem we've been losing players as well, so I'm wondering if others are figuring it out as well.

Do you mean deducting the green/table fee out of the prize money? Or do you mean fewer players are participating in the tournament, so the total prize money is decreasing proportionally.

They used to pay out 100% of the entry fees in prize money.
Without any posting or notice they started taking 20%
I know that's usual in a lot of Tournaments but was never done before here.

If 100% of the entry fees were returned in prize money, did they charge for table time? If they didn't charge for table time, how did they make their money? Did they rely on players to buy food and drinks to make money?

No always relied on food and drinks.
Always had a real good turnout.
Been dropping lately

So in order to remain profitable, they relied exclusively on food and drink sales, while giving away table time and entry fees back as prize money. Turnout has probably dropped below the break even point. It may have been already been like this for a while, so it sounds like now they're trying to make up the difference. It may have been a business decision between holding the tournaments, if it continues to lose money. Owners have to look at opportunity costs.

Turning the attention towards attendance. Is it the same group of people winning, or does everyone have a fair chance? Does the owner advertise?

Alway had a real good turnout.

Handicapped pretty fairly
Lots of differnet winners, very competitive.
Placed is always packed
Just not as many playing in the Tournament

If the house was always paying out 100 percent, and then stopped, no matter the reason, there should have been some notification. Locally at my room there is a nine ball event every Tuesday night. The pay out is based on number of entrants, and house pays 100 percent. If they changed that, they would let the players know.

I agree the House has the right to do what they want.
They should have let everyone know the policy had changed

I agree, the house should have let everyone know. Either by announcing it at the start of each tournament for the first couple of weeks, or a notice on the wall. You can kindly point out to managment that players may be staying away because they were being secretive, and not open.

weekly tournament

That's to bad, sounds like you are on the verge of losing your weekly tournament. I do have a question. Was the tournament run by the owner and his staff or an outside promoter?
You stated this place is busy otherwise. I would say give the owner some advice, but it depends if they are approachable and receptive. A lot of times people do not want to hear advice and/or critiques about their business.
It does sound like this place means something to you so, if I was you I would speak my mind. Be diplomatic though. What can we do to get this tournament going again?

1) Is or was there a Calcutta? great way to add to prize money!
2) Break and run contest.
3) The entry fee gets you what?

This is run in House.
Used to be run by the House Pro, so maybe they're using to money to pay someone to do it now. As it not him running it anymore.

This is a great place, best around. I just wish that we all knew about the change ahead of time. Might have been better received.

Whether the 20% has effected the turn out is anyone's guess.

I thought it would pick up now that the summer is over but it didn't.

So if the entry fee is $25 the house gets $5 which is 20%. I am guessing at the actual numbers, but for example.
That is not bad at all if that covers your table time/ green fees.
From the owners perspective he accounts for the table time lost on how many tables he/she is going to lock up for the tournament. You said the place is busy, so maybe they could care less if the tournament continues. They would probably make more money renting them out hourly at a group rate.( i.e. group of college kids drinking beer and banging away)

Is the owner a player? That definitely helps, because they would understand the value of the tournament within their pool playing community. Which is a lot more than just the money. It's the competition, gamesmanship, and the pure execution of this beautiful game.

Anyway I hope the Monday night tournament revives.

Thanks I hope it does too.
The more people the better it is.
