Strength in numbers

A number of years ago I was up in Sacramento, CA, taking some tests to qualify for the new California smog inspector license, which had just been upgraded. To even take the test, the dreaded L-1 test, you had to be at least an ASE certified Master Mechanic with a smog ticket. Most of us had many other certifications as well.

So here we were, 300 or so Master Mechanics from every possible background finishing up our hours-long tests at about 10 at night on a FREEZING! cold night in the winter in Sacramento. Naturally, when we were finished, we had to hang out outside and talk about...what? Cars, naturally! We stood there in the cold telling mechanic war stories and exchanging knowledge and phone numbers for a long while. It was great. You could feel the awesome amount of experience and knowledge crackling in the air. It was truly amazing.

Finally the security guy came out and told us we had to get out of the parking lot so he could lock up, and someone pipes in with "Well, I guess no one will be stuck in the parking lot!" We all laughed for a long time, then got in our cars and drove away. It was a great evening.

At it's best, this forum makes me feel the same way. Thanks!

Robin

Edit: I certainly do not profess to be a "Master" cuemaker yet, but I've made good progress and it sure is fun hanging out with them.
