I started a thread similar to this one a couple of years back without much success. I am interested in finding out if anyone has heard from "Tall Paul" Miles a.k.a. "Bobby Jones" ? He was one of the most "charismatic" people that I have ever met.

I am not in any way any sort of P.I. or cop, he was just a very colorful person who made a BIG imapct on me in my late teens and early 20's. Humphrey wrote a whole chapter about him, anybody else have any stories or info about him?

I know some of you guys from NAWLINS have some! SHARE PLEASE :D

There is a "Tall PauL" that still plays pool in New Orleans, but he is not Paul Miles. You may have him mixed up with Paul Miles. I used to drink and play pool with Paul Miles. One story that I can relate from the 1980s is (insert flashback music Here):
Paul was in action at Gary's Triple Play on Veterans Blvd. in New Orleans (actually a 24 hour action spot in Metairie). He was stuck at the time and when he missed a very makeable shot, he broke his cue in half with a loud POW. He didn't want to continue by using a cue off the wall, so he went around the room asking/begging to borrow a cue. Finally, someone loaned him a cue and he continued to try and get out of the trap. Sure enough, a few games later, he missed another easy shot and broke the borrowed cue in half. The cue's owner had 'gone down the road' (gone to another lounge, but to return later) and didn'tknow that his cue had been snapped. Paul set out around the packed bar to 'borrow' another cue. Everyone was laughing and pointing out that only an IDIOT would now loan Paul a cue to play with. Paul promised to cut anyone in on half his winnings (he was still stuck) and if ANYTHING happened to the cue, he would buy the cue. Sure enough, someone bit and loaned Paul their good cue. Everything went smoothly and there were sidebets of drinks and cash among the sweators as to whether this cue might escape the wrath of Paul. I mean, Paul SWORE that he was under control and would take special care of this cue. He missed a shot and slammed the cue against the table and shattered it (as far as I know, this is a record that may never be broken). Three broken cues. Oy-Vey ! His opponent quit a winner and Paul didn't have any money to pay for the broken cue(s). Paul was NUTS... funny, but NUTS. He came and sat down at the bar next to me and Linette (Gary's wife & co-owner) who had just arrived. We drank for awhile and I started to relate what had transpired earlier to Linette (with sound effects and all). She had just taken a sip of her drink when I made her laugh. She blew her front false tooth out of her mouth and sprayed her drink all over. Though we searched for an hour, we could not find that tooth.
We sat and drank all night. Linette made 'another false tooth' by wadding up a piece of bar napkin, but every time she would take a drink, she would swallow her 'napkin tooth'. She went through about half a stack of napkins that night. There was never a dull moment at The Triple Play, particularly if Paul Miles was in attendance....

Sizl,
The last I heard he was still in Canada but had ran into a little trouble. Didnt
he have some immigration troubles when we knew him?

I will email a friend and see if he is still around. He was back playing
snooker on some kind of tour of something.

He might not be Paul Miles or Bobby Jones anymore!
I just rememeber the last time he came back he walked in
and paid Bo off some money he owed him. Bo said he never
thought he would ever see the money. I dont know what he was
doing there because he only played a couple games of pool
and headed to Popular Head.

He was a funny guy to watch play. Never a dull moment.

Are you hitting them any? I got to get that book Humphrey wrote. Is it
any good?

Yes you could say that.....he was here illegally. But he did not act like it, you would have thought he had DIPLOMATIC IMMUNITY the way he carried himself.

I heard somewhere that his real name was Paul Supchek (sp?), but I am not sure.

About what year was that when he came in and paid Bo some $$$?

The last time I saw him was about 94' or so. He had just got back to Dothan and he been on the road in Georgia and had made a BIG score. He asked me if I wanted to got to Nawlin's with him, and I declined. He went to Nawlin's and stayed there a while until I heard the heat got to bad and he went back to Canada. He called Bill Taylor and told him that the car that Bill had let him borrow was at the airport.

I am still playing a little on the weekends. I bought a Joss and it got stolen, so I am in the market for another one.

I have heard alot of people say negative things about Humphrey's book, but I have to tell you ............I LOVED IT! He travels off the path of pool for a page or two but it was an interesting read. You will like it as well Frank. Do you know why I can say that? Because it will be the same reason that I liked it so much..... 95% of the people in the book I have gambled with or made money with. It has stories in it and I swear I know that I was at some of those places around the same time he was talking about. And you was right there beside me most of the time, so I think you will enjoy it.

How are you hitting them? I will be at the Fast Eddies tourney here in March. Come on over!

T,
I am going to get the book. I agree we learned alot of things first hand and
its fun to read about people you know or have watched. Between Bo, Warren, Ronnie Y, Chuck Ford, Jr, B. Taylor, Sid, Archer, Jimmy A,
Bruce, Bobby N and others we have seen almost everything.
We also showed them a few things lol . I miss the days of Checkers and Hermans being packed. There are not many places like that
anymore.

I think it was around 97-98ish when a saw Bobby last. I cant be sure.
He was in for a bit and then out. It was not real long before Jimmy King showed back up. The years are running together now.

I might just show up out there for a tournament one day. When in March
is the Fast Eddies tourney? I have been hitting them some but not really playing a lot. Theres not a decent pool room near me and most people
play at a bar here. It reminds me a little of Checkers. They get alot of
people playing in there. I play league and that actually keeps me out there but doesnt allow me a lot of time to practice too much. I picked up 3 Cushion
and like it a bunch.

Do you remember when C. Ford went to Nawlins with Sid and asked Sid
for the keys to Sids car. He sais he needed a coat. He went out and didnt come back for a couple of hours. I can still picture Sid telling that story
with all the details like it was yesterday.

The Fast Eddies trny is March 12-14.
The last I heard the old (Checkers) Players closed down, but you could write a book about that place as well.

I could sit there for hours and listen to all of Sid's stories. I can relate to the "The years are starting to run together" statement.

I went home for xmas. I did not make it to Herman's, but I talked to Jr. He said he was still playing, and you know if he is playing he is getting the $$$$$$$$$! Have you been able to get back that way any???

I sure would like to hear from my friend Bobby!

He don't owe me anything either, but I owe him a steak and lobster dinner and a shot of Congac. I sure would like to be able to pay him back. I would love to see my friend "Bobby"!
