taper question

How much does length effect shaft taper? I'm having a 60 inch cue made, 30/30 split, and i'd like to use scruggs standard taper, but will the extra inch change the hit? I'm grateful for any info you can provide.

Of coarse it will. Just how much? Can't really say. Where the extra inch is put will make a difference in the shafts hit also. Front of shaft (ferrule end) will cause a little more whippiness, rear end (joint end) not as much of a factor in my opinion.

Make sure the extra butt inch is added to the back of the cue, so the joint will maintain the normal diameter. Add a little more meat to the back of the shaft also instead of just making the pro taper a inch longer and it should play fine for a 60 inch cue.

So by approaching the front of the shaft normally, and extending the joint end an inch i should be able to keep a fairly stiff hit, correct? The last thing i want is a whippy shaft. I do have a 29 inch Horn shaft with a REALLY long taper, that actually hits pretty stiff. It doesn't make sense to me, hence the question. I know i'm in good hands, Troy Downey is making the cue, but it's my first 60 in cue- so i'm a little worried it will be a bigger change(hit wise) than i anticipated. As far as balance or joint diameters, i'm not worried at all, troy is a perfectionist. By adding the inch to the rear, in my mind it would stiffen the hit, but i'm probably wrong.
