A blade for a saw type shaft machine must have a very special grind put on it. Although most saw re-sharpeners have the capability to put the right grind on a blade, unless instructed, they would never do it.

what are the specs..

How does a normal blade need to be modified in order to work for tapering?

U just have to flaten the tops on the blade to get a smooth cut, also sometimes the sides of the blades.............very easy to do for a saw shop.

Ftg

Yes just have to specify a flat top grind on the blade. And best to maybe not use the ultra thin kerf blades. Just plain old heavy duty carbide tipped blades. The sides of the blade will not affect its use for shafts I believe. If we only do light cuts we never really use the sides all that much, and they generally do not have too radical of an alternating grind on the sides of most blades I have seen.

Thanks for the info guys.

rhncue/Dick you said a very special grind in your post. Is their something else I need to tell the re-sharpening guys other than what the other two guys have stated?

olsonsview the link you provided seams to take me to a cooking supplies place is this right I didn’t see anything about re-sharpening listed I think the link may be bad? Do you use this shop for your re-sharpening?

Thanks

Shaft Saw Machine Blades

Hi:

I went thru about 3 blades before I found one that would cut satisfactorily.
The one that worked best was a 12 inch carbide with a .110" thickness, these are used to cut aluminun and have very little kerf. I purchased a pair of GOOD
blade stabilizers from Bosch. The saw blade was sent to a carbide sharpener
to have the teeth cut square. Saw blades from Loews or Home Depot are to thin as there is a lot of side load on the blade and the blade distorts near the teeth.

Set up correctly you can hog thru ebony butts and leave a perfect finish.

Blades and stabilizers can be purchased from www.mcmastercarr.com.

Blades

I have not used them in years, I have been guilty of just buying new blades.. But some very active woodworking friends of mine rave about that company. The phone number works, they are open m-f 8-5 eastern. and till 7 on wed. I just looked at what I messaged you, I transposed a couple alpha characters .... my bad! The web is: www.jencso.com , I am sorry for the confusion.

Just as others have said, use a FTG profile. This grind is normally only used on Ripping blades but Ripping type blades only have 23 teeth. I have found that 60 teeth seems to work best on a 10" blade and I use 72 teeth on a 12" blade. Blade stiffeners also help and the larger the kerf the better. I originally got my blades from Bull Sharpening Service in Chicago as they have been making blades for shaft machines for a number of cue makers for a number of years but now I just have them done locally once I found someone who understood what I wanted done. 3 different places cut my blades wrong because they didn't comprehend what I was going to do with them and they had never put a FTG on a blade with that many teeth who's gullets were so shallow. I normally use Imana tri-cut blades and then change their profile. Imana blades are expensive but the carbide is larger and the blades are well made for many sharpenings.

I had a 12" 72 tooth blade made last year that has a double thick plate and a .250 kerf but as yet I have never mounted it.
