The definition of a sport

Any athletic activity that uses physical skills, often competitive. Although this seems easy enough to look up, it seems a lot of posters on here haven't. So here it is in all its raw glory, just thought I would clear this what is or isn't a sport up.

The i think the more difficult question will become, what is not a sport? Chess? Board games? poker definitely has limited physical involvement beside pushing chips, toying with them. I thought that Chess was considered as a competitive sport. Maybe anything that requires sportsmanship is a sport.

I suppose in todays context what ever appeals to people more is a sport. The bigger the appeal the more sport it is!

So your baisically telling me no matter what the dictionary says your just going to pretty much make up your own definition....I admire that. Does chess require physical skill, no. Does poker, no. I mean it doesn't take that much effort to put this definition, THE definition to anything, and say well does this match? No? Than its not a sport. Why am I having to explain this again?

I am not telling you anything.

Not sure what you are admiring.

I think i am implying that poker is not a sport but is shown on a sports channel so maybe people consider some games a sport.

Dictionary has tons of definition some of which do not have practical application. And if i am not wrong they are written by human beings which i suspect has different opinion and interpretation of things depending on what society they come from.

Hey I almost forgot I am a from this planet too! And have opinion and different interpretation of things as well.

Sorry to intrude into your thread. Did not know that this was an off limit, not open for discussion thread.

I apologise.

Oh God, yes please lets go down the relativist road because its so fun and practical in and of itself. Sure, sure, you can define anything aaaaany way you want, because what is anything but someone's opinion, so its all subjective and things change from one culture to another, so there is not a definition of a sport, or right or wrong for that matter, and burning children alive is cool somewhere who are we to say its wrong because after all it would just be our opinion. Why must I deal with such nonsense?
