The Greatest Tournament Ever Held?

Just got an email from a friend of mine that played in the European championships ( www.europeanpoolchampionships.com )this past week. Follows are some random thoughts which lead to support a vote for the above...

Many players described this as the greatest venue for pool they had ever seen

The organizers players and sponsors reportetly spent 400k on the venue

They tested the website for 1 year before hand, and used it secretly on 3 tourneys during the year to fix bugs

They had 4 guys with wireless PDAs walking around to update the scores every 7 secs live on the net

The players lounge could hold 400 people and had internet terminals, a live stream of the 3 TV tables, live scores for all matches and a full bar and a massive TV screen

They had a team a few days before hand that went round breaking stuff, so they could time how long it would take to track and fix problems!!

The lights over the tables were too hot, so on a sunday they sourced 74 replacement lights and installed them that night

Lots more stuff but the above are the highlights.

A big congratulations goes out to the event organziers, promoters, sponsors and all players that attended. Wish I could have been there (maybe next year, Team Ireland!!)

Maybe we will have a US event on par with the above??

Already replied to this, but AzB crashed just when I was sending my post, and my text disappeared

Hi Shane ! As a player in that particular tournament, I can tell you almost everything you mentioned was accurate. It was perhaps the greatest tournament ever ! 24 tables in total and 3 tables in separate tv area with a lot of room for spectators. The players area was nice, although I did most of my hanging around in the venue area watching great matches ! There were a lot of cues to be sold plus 3 different tables provided by different sponsors, not EPBF. Usually there aren't any practice tables in EPC, because EPBF thinks they will make players gamble and EPBF has strict rules about gambling, you could get kicked out of the tournament if you are seen gambling. Actually, this year they kicked out one referee for gambling...

And yes, the lights were very hot at some of the tables. I played one my matches on those tables with different lights against Ortmann and the rail surface was easily 20-40 degrees (F) above room temperature ! The cloth felt warm too. Luckily, the next day the lights had been changed and the conditions were much cooler on every table...

Too bad they had only one internet broadcast and you couldn't choose the table you wanted to watch. But the internet broadcast was best ever, they had many cameras and provided many camera angels and slow motions etc.

Very very nice tournament...

Who's your friend, Shane ? :p

The live coverage was excellent!

It looked like the pockets were too loose, Souquet commented on his site that they were not a true test for players of this calibre.

Also, can the greatest tournament ever be one that has no prize money? :p It looks like in future editions they are looking for a big money sponsor.

Player on Irish Team (Gareth Deegan) and heard some comments first hand from some of the German Team.

The live coverage was awesome, it's no wonder Holland has gotten to host alot of top calibre tournaments lately (Mosconi Cup, World Pool Masters) after seeing this tournament.
