i played in a tournament tonight. 9-ball regulation tables. handicapped. they were gracious enough to put me in at the 7-ball. i won. that's not the main story here. yes, i made some wicked great shots, blah, blah blah, what the real story was, was the man with the house cue. the guy i played in the finals was a plus1. but that wasn't even good enough!, the director, said, he will be banned after tonight. now that's a player!!!!! this guy was one of the greatest pool players i ever saw!!!!! ready for this? he didn't own his own cue, he used a house cue!!! before the tournament, he picked a cue that felt good in his hands, looked at the tip, took out sandpaper, roughed and shaped the tip , and walla, he was ready! the son of a bitch was ultra deadly. his style was like robert byrnes. he stood erect. his legs were straight! he moved the cue back and forth for his warm up strokes very slowly, steadily and ultra measured. he held the butt end of the cue way back on its bumper. he was around 6 foot 2 tall. his temperment, never ever faultered. he was calm, soft smooth. he never used english! he hardly moved the cue ball around! he never hit the ball hard! always soft!, PEOPLE, THIS WAS 9-BALL!!! he was hitti'n e'm like straight pool! he played 3 people races to 7, and within those races, he may have missed 4 times!!! i kid you not! i had to play him in the finals. i went to the 6-ball. a race to 7. i started out, shakey, and weak. plus, he was getting all the rolls. the score was 4 to 2, him. i said "keep positive" to myself. i was able to build momentom, i picked up my pace, sort of like charlie williams. at one point everyone watching especially my great opponent, thought he had me on the 3 foul rule. i was on 2, he warned me. i was up table, with all 9 balls everywhere. my cue ball was snuggled, and smoothered, but i had a good amount of the short cushion to work with. the one ball was way down table. i said to myself, "so you like 3-cushion billiards do ya?" well, go get him kid. i gave myself a POSITVE attitude. i did the measuring excersice with the back end of my cue, a line extended, out and back in. i felt good, i let go, and the stunned crowd watched a kick shot, that would have made efren reyes smile and shake his head! the cue ball hit the short cushion, came off right above the side pocket, hit the center of the opposite short cushion, missed the 9-ball that was off the short cushion and middle diamond by 3 inches! by a human hair, and contacted the 1 ball flush, DEAD ON!!! my opponent, must have died! people were shaking their heads! the nice part was i aimed it! anyhow, i got to the hill before he did, and won the tournament 7-5. this guy was so good, i wish all of you could have seen him shoot. i rarly give out compliments, but this guy was something else. so pure, without airs, without crazy manipulation of the cue ball, lack of english and excessive, juice. he never missed! anyhow, it's 2:39 a.m and i can't sleep, cause i just got home, from the tournament. i ask myself for the lousy $150 1st. place price, is it worth staying out this late, when you have to wake up early for work?

that guy with the house cue, sounds like he plays like i do. except i like to be somewhat Flamboyant at the table.

DCP: You serious? You posted your stats a while ago, and methinks Mr. Housecue here would whoop you! :)

P.S. Nice win Bernie!

thanks for the kind words, guys, it means a lot. you know, i was thinking, should i post the guy with the house cues name?, why not? here it is, tom O'brian. if any of you are in the new york area, and see this name posted, on the tournament board, you could either A. ---quietly back out of the tournament, and watch him, or B. --still play in it, but pray hard!, you got to see this guy in action!

As the self-proclaimed "expert" pool player and all things related, and the final critic of folks who purchase medium to high-end cues, I am totally surprised at your reaction. Of all people, you should know it's not the cue but the shooter.

The cue does not make a shooter - the shooter makes the cue. Efrin could walk in your local hall and pick a house cue at random and kick butt. Why, because he knows how to instantly adjust to any situation including using any cue.

Average +

"and within those races, he may have missed 4 times!!! i kid you not!".

You miss 4 times in a race to 7 you should lose 4-0.
i played a guy last month and i missed 5 balls in a race to 10 and lost 10-4.

he is a good player tho.

Gabber.

Nice win Bernie. I don't think I've ever backed out of a tournament, and I don't think this guy scares me either. I love to play guys like Parica, Matlock, Breedlove, and especially in a tournament. All you can lose is the entry fee and you can learn a bunch. Sam

I find it hard to believe that a guy who plays this good does it day in and day out with a strange house cue and doesn't have his own. I'm sure he must have one but might have opted not to use it on this particular night. Maybe he's out looking for a Mali right now. Based on his game and style of play, what did you learn that you might try to incorporate into your own game when you play 9 ball that will make you a better player, although I'm not losing sight of the fact that you still won.

no, no, no, he missed 4 times out of 3 RACES to 7!, now, that's unbelievable!

you know drivemaker, i think the thing i took away, the most was, the delivery of the cue to the cue ball. he was so non elevated, so soft and smooth on contact, it was almost like he COULDN'T screw up the shot that way. i guess, that's what i took away.

Bob Byrne : ...because good players know the importance of a level cue...

Expensive cues are all HYPE according to playing ability.

I have never believed in the all of the hype of the cuemakers.

In fact, I witnessed a well known cue maker hustle someone with a bar cue. This particular cue maker has sold sticks for thousands and tens of thousand of dollars all over the world.I will not list his name. For a fifty dollar bet, he cut the tip off of a bar cue, shaped the cut wood to a dime and chalked it up. He won the game. After their match, I picked up the stick shot with it. I could draw the ball 3 rails + on a Brunswick 9' gold crown with Simonis!

He proved my long time theory. The tip is the most important item on a cue and its the player behind the stick.

I once played in an out of town $1000 add tournament and played with a house cue. I beat a fairly good player on a hill hill match. I got more joy out of him telling everyone he got beat by someone with a house stick then I did winning the match! I played Dallas West once with a house stick also. I had him down, but lost that one.

All things said, I shoot with a custom now. Consistency is very important at high levels of play, and you just cant afford to chance finding a good tip.

Im not trying to kill any cuemakers action by the way just to opposite. I appreciate the fine craftsmanship of many a cuemaker. In fact I love my production Budwieser cue with 314 shaft and moori tip!

P.S. The cuemaker was in the Guinness Book of World Records for selling the most expensive cue. Send me a private message if you figure it out.
