Hi, this is JP from CuesNThings.
I have something unique to announce.
Announcing the PHANTOM, A player's cue by the renowned cue makers Tim Scruggs and Mike Cochran. After over 28 years of handcrafting custom cues, they are now making available, the "Phantom" Special Edition Ultimate Player's Cue. Aspects of the construction are taken from extensive cue making knowledge developed over many years. The "Phantom" is an accomplished player's cue. "A serious cue for serious players"

I absolutely love the 3 scruggs cues that i currently have in my collection.....

But a special edition phantom cue? The cue looks mass produced with no veneers, doesn't even look like Birdseye maple or curly maple.

What's next, a 1 of 1 where the word "Phantom" is in blue, yellow, or green?

Hmm, I'm not trying to knock on this cue but that's it? I thought it's gonna be some spectacular cue. Beside the fact that it's a Scruggs, I don't see anything special about this cue. Please correct me.

Thanks

Holey moley!!

There has been some lament for a little while now that Tim wasn't really doing SP's anymore....and they are widely sought after and prized for that very reason. The attention to detail, down to the matching red fiber pads @ the tips...nice touch. Into jet black ebony, my fav colors are red and white....and how often do you get a lizard wrap on a SP?!....sorry.....Phantom?!!

If it were something I could afford, I would likely purchase one.:)

Nice cue there JP.

Exactly my point too. You could get a basic 4 point cue with veneers for $1,900 and it will still look better than this.

I too would agree that the price tag seems abit high.. but these could very well be one of the last handfull of cues tim ever makes.. who knows how well his health is and how many more cues he will actually make... yes.. i agree it does look plain.. but the ebony and workmanship looks incredible.. i give it an a+ for that.. i dont think it is actually a glorified sp..
wasnt it balabushka and szamboti who used the straight grain maple over the curly and birdseye because they felt it played better.. i think its a cue that has the player in mind for hit and how strong it will play.. most good players around me dont like fancy cues.. but thats only opinion i guess..

but what really turns me off is that it says phantom above the wrap.. maybe if it was hand written on the forearm or printed on the buttcap but it is just a turn off for me..

other then that the cue looks great.. how negotiable is the price tag?

and just because the 1900 cue looks better.. does it play better?

$2100 is way out of line for this cue IMO. I don't see it at all. The forearm is plain (no veneers), no inlays, and nothing special other than the lizard wrap. I don't want to knock a TS cue because I highly respect Tim and Mike's work, but $2100 it too much!

Look at that thing through my crystal ball!

I have never seen a joint like that on a Scruggs cue and into a HELLO full splice forearm. HOLY SUOTHWEST ON STEROIDS!!!
I can only imagine the way that monster will cream the rock! And yes that is what a player like me has been waiting for a long time to see.
Whoever buys it will probably never know how great a cue like that can play but if the put in the house pros hands they will find the money spent on that cue was well spent!
Is every thing a little clearer now!

looks cheap to me

It kinda looks like a Sears cue conversion. There is so much better stuff out there for 2G than this. Hope this doesnt offend the Scruggs fans but come on!

??????????????

Calling This A Players Cue Is Sorta Missleading It Makes It Actually Sound Affordable,,,but For 2100 Its Anything But,,,,i Would Rather Spend My Money On A Veneered Scruggs Cue For 1900,,,,does The Phantom Atleast Havr Ivory Ferruls

??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

That's all I've got to say.

OK Guys; There is much more to this cue then the photos can show. You can go to WWW.CUESNTHINGS.COM for full specifications.

This is a players cue,not a collecter's cue in that Tim & Mike put their thoughts together on what would make in their opinion a great players' cue.
It may not be for everyone, and if cost of this hand crafted cue may be out of reach for some, that's understandable. Tim and Mike are not mass producing this cue.

Let's start at the Ferrule. It is a short 3/4" Ivory Ferrule that is threaded on to an oversized tenon, for strength, hit and low resonance. Shafts are of a special progressive taper to maximize stability, starting at a comfortable 12.75mm tip, which has been chemically treated. Shafts are of super premium stiff clear wood. Joint Collars are threaded in position, and the Joint Pin is a 3/8" Radial, which they feel is the best currently available. Forearm is Straight Grain Maple, which is the most solid and low in resonance. The Gabon Ebony points, which are full depth were chosen for solid strength. Veneers would only slightly weaken hit, it was felt. The Butt and Wrap area have a compound taper(Getting slightly larger to rear) This has been done again to strengthen over feel of cue in hand and enhance strength of hit. A high quality Lizard wrap was chosen for appearance.

This is Tim & Mike's version of a high quality players cue. High quality hand crafted cues do cost more. This cue is not for all, but for a few who can appreciate the labor and effort that went into it's construction.

Your opinions expressed are appreciated, but keep in mind this is their combined effort based on their knowledge on what makes an excellant overall players cue, based on their 28 years experience.

Thanks again JP

I thought for sure I would be looking at an Ivory handled MONSTER. All of Scruggs cues are players.

...

I think it is not a bad looking cue, sure it is not what everyone expected for being a limited type mid to highrun cue. Guess in comparason to what some other cuemakers plain janes or sneaky pete conversions go for it isn't that bad (IMO) I'm not one to knock someones work, don't like, don't buy it.

Personally, I don't think Tim has touched much wood himself in several years. Most of his cues now are made by new, learning, cuemakers. That doesn't mean that this cue doesn't perform well. It just means spend the money for the quality of play and not the name.

Its a nice cue but I feel like Chris..the PHANTOM printed above the wrap screams production cue. I know thats a foolish reason to feel negative towards it but for $2100 , if it has to scream, I want it to scream "1 of 1".

Tim Scruggs Phantom

I hope I've answered the cue's construction details.

I realize that all of AZ people come from all corners of the World and few get to visit cuemakers.

Fortunately I get to visit Tim Scruggs Custom Cues,in Baltimore, Maryland every Saturday. Tim and Mike are two of the finest people I know.

The shop has two cuemakers, Tim & Mike, one helper, who moves cues and wood from work station to work station, and another fellow who answers the phone and Emails, that's it.

PS Tim is working as hard as ever, he feels and looks fine. JP
