I know that I read somewhere that Willie Mosconi was quoted as saying "There is always a playable ball." A few days ago, while waiting for my World of Warcraft auction scan to finish, I began hitting balls on my table. As I got to the last four or five balls I realized that I had a pretty good break shot looming. I hadn't missed at that point, so I went ahead and finished the rack as though I were playing Straight Pool. Coming up to the break ball I came off the bottom rail way short of the perfect break shot and would now have to play the break ball in the bottom right corner pocket and come back off the side rail into the stack. I made the ball, hit the stack, and knocked out a few balls. There was, however, no apparent secondary break shot. It looked like I was done after a run of 15. After walking around the table several times and studying the rack for several minutes, I finally see a possible kiss shot off the 8 into the 1. I looked very carefully, got down and stroked the shot and it went!! I was so surprised I had to sit down for a couple of minutes, saying to my wife that I wished I had that shot on video. My run ended at 22 due to not hitting a cluster of several balls. I tried one of two possible kiss shots but missed.
It just reminded me of how important it is to look hard for a make-able shot, it may be there if you look!
Joyous Yule!
